I'm back...
On the board that is.... I'm still in Southeast Asia... I'm moving to Manila in a couple of weeks...

Anything you say bad about the Philippines is multiplied in Vietnam. The air there is much cleaner than here, trust me. (I was there on a day when everyone was complaining earlier this year.) I've gotten used here to a strange combination aroma of kerosene, blessing incense (downtown Saigon is mostly Buddhist), and the river (gee, I wonder why it's brown!)

aroma incense and kerosene isn't that bad. its just the hot weather and the car pollution that makes your sweat black thats icky! I would love to live in the Philippines just not in metro manila

It's 24 hours here with those smells, though. You can't make it sound worse. And the noise never stops here. Manila, even though some stores and the Internet cafes stay open 24 hours, is quiet after 9:00 at night. We get jackhammers in the street at 2:00 am some nights here!
When I was there I rode a bus (no AC) down to Northern Mindanao (no shower for three days) and then rode a ship back up to Manila (also fourth class, meaning my accommodation was a padded shelf!)

Butuan, Gingoog, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ozamiz, and Riverside (yes, I stopped there just because I was born in Riverside, California...) There is a town in the Philippines called Riverside!
