Spam Spam Spam Spam...

If you take a look at the memberlist for accounts created in the past couple of days, you'll notice a whole lot of spammer accounts (nonsense names, homepage links to spam sites, etc.). As such, we are experiencing an uptick in the amount of spam posts for the time being. Rest assured that the moderating staff will take care of these as soon as we see them. Dave has already been notified about the accounts.

And a reminder that clicking on any of the links in these posts could be potentially harmful to you and your computer! :(

Agreed. And, thanks to image linking, some of the posts have been graphic. If it looks like an obvious spam thread, just ignore it.

Also, allow me to clarify: this post serves as a message that you don't need to PM the moderators about these threads. We will delete them as soon as we log on and see them, which is the same time we'd be seeing any PMs anyway.

that means PM moderators about spam threads because it annoys them!

I will PM mods if the spam is particularly pr0nish and I see that a mod is online. The sooner it is gone, the better in my book. :)

Plus I am deleting their user accounts as fast as I find them, in some cases only minutes after they register.

There are websites out there that are resources for spammers and every now and then they will list our website URL as a location where they can post their crap. When that happens we get a sudden rash of spam postings and registrations, as we are getting now. Only they soon learn that their time is wasted because not only do I delete their accounts, I ban the email account domains they use to register. That means if their email address is abcdef@xyz.com, I band all email addresses coming from xyz.com. They have to create a new email address everytime they try to register here. They eventually get the hint and go away.

i don't know if everyone else has been experiencing this, but i use one of my e-mail accounts for this forum alone (meaning i don't use it for any other online account [i.e. myspace, youtube, etc.]). and since the spam topics have been popping up i've been getting some explicit spam. i have my spam guard on, but they still manage to get in and flood my inbox.

is there anything that i can do about it? i use a yahoo account for this forum. suggestions would be highly appreciated...thanks!

Use g-mail. They have the most adaptive/intuitive spam interface I've ever used (that includes custom configured Oracle, ORF, Yahoo, and a couple of local ISPs).

Yahoo! Mail is the Internet Explorer of webmail programs. It's okay to use when you're first starting out and don't know any better, but really you should upgrade as soon as possible.

I agree, go with gmail. I use my main gmail account for this forum and every other forum and don't have a problem with spam.

I have a hotmail account that I use to register for all online sites, and just expect spam to go there, I only ever check it for things like confirmation emails, and then I have a separate personal account through my ISP Verizon, that I give out to people I actually know and want emailing me.

Sorry Kevin about the notification angle on this. I sort of freaked out a couple of weeks ago about something that was inappropriate here, so I promise I won't IM everyone again.

No problem. I still get PMs several times a week about porn spam in off-topic. EVERY SINGLE TIME, without exception, by the time I've logged on to get the PM, the posts have already been deleted by someone else. It's just not an efficient way of notifying us any more quickly.

To update this thread with the new forum software...you'll notice there is now a button with a red exclamation point at the bottom right corner of every post. You can use this button to report inappropriate posts, whether it is spam or just a user that is out of line. Please feel free to use this function to notify moderators of any post that concerns you, rather than by PM.

BTW, not one spammer has been able to make it through the new safeguards built into the new version of the forum software!
