Story in today's Press-Enterprise:

Hemet High senior killed in car crash wanted to follow lead of dad, a sheriff's deputy

Like many high school seniors, Michael Throne had been busy laying out his life for the next five years.

He planned to follow in his father's footsteps and go into law enforcement. He and his girlfriend of 2½ years, Martha Anaya, were making life plans with each other. And he always wanted to keep his trumpet handy, because music was a big part of his life.

But on Monday, the Hemet High School Jazz Band was mourning the loss of its first-chair, lead trumpet. Throne, 17, was killed Saturday morning when the car he was driving slammed into another vehicle at the intersection of Alessandro Boulevard and Gilman Springs Road in Moreno Valley.

Two people in the other car were critically injured, along with Throne's identical twin brother, Timothy, who was riding with him.

"It was windy and some dust blowing across the road must have blinded Michael for just that split-second," said the boys' mother, Julie Throne, of Hemet. "That's when he hit the other car."

She described Michael as "a straight-A student with the sky as the limit." He just recently decided he wanted to take the same career path as his father, Randy Throne, a chief deputy and 25-year veteran with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Michael and Timothy were on their way to see their father, who lives in Riverside, on Saturday morning. That night they planned to race "dwarf cars" at a local track.

Dan Boulton, Michael's music teacher, described him as "quiet and very-good natured."

"It's been a very hard day here," Boulton said from the school on Monday. "We've been putting our heads together trying to get through this."

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Valle Vista Assembly of God Church. Julie Throne asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Hemet High School Jazz Band, in care of Dan Boulton, Hemet High School, 41701 Stetson Ave., Hemet.
