World of Pageantry

So my aunt from London visited me and my family this week. And last summer I went to Medieval Times and bought some tarot cards. I leave them in the original packaging and in our loft, my aunt sees them and goes nuts and tells my mom to "destroy" them because they're "evil".

At first I heard them screaming downstairs to ban something from our house, and I think they're actually destroying my $30 deck somehow. Turns out they didn't because my cards were still in the loft...untouched. What they were yelling about is still a mystery.

Now...are tarot cards evil or was my aunt just closed minded (or just super religious)? And was my mom wrong for pushing my aunt's beliefs/fears onto her and me? I'm still kinda ticked about it especially now that I have to hide my deck and say I gave it to a friend.

Yes. Too many parents parrot that "my house, my rules" line of crap over every little situation they don't want to deal with (I'm not saying "my house, my rules" doesn't have its place in the parent/child dynamic, but I do think many parents over-use/abuse it). Forcing the "child" into unwilling obedience of any major life decision (such as spirituality/religion) is not a successful way to raise a responsible adult.

I have huge respect for the Amish philosophy of Rumspringa, in which they allow their teenagers to rebel, drive cars, listen to rock music, experience the "modern" world, etc. Some kids develop a taste for it and leave the community forever. The majority get it out of their system and voluntarily return to the Amish community. The belief behind it is that each person must choose to be Amish, they cannot be forced into it. Bravo! If only more religious people functioned like this.

Inanimate objects are not evil (or good for that matter). People are evil.

to me i dont think they are and if tarot cards predict something, coinsidently it is true because no matter how you interpret it, you can make it true.

Why in whichever-diety-you-choose would an aunt have a fit and tell someone how to raise a 23-year old? At this point in the game it's none of her business ... you are an adult. I would be the first to open the pack, lay them out (in any old fashion), then "gasp" and look at her in terror and shake my head in sadness, just to watch the look on her face. But that's just me and I'm evil like that.

Well I don't think they're evil but apparently they're useless. My roommate told me that to work correctly, tarot cards have to be bought for you by someone else.

My grandmother practiced santeria, a catholicized version of voodoo. She read tarot cards, tea leaves, palms and made love potions for the neighborhood [I guess you'd say she was a white or good witch]. My mother is a doctor and doesn't believe any of it. It's only evil if the person using it is.

Hogwash. To work, a deck must be placed near where the reader sleeps, so that the cards absorb one's aura. Doesn't matter who buys the deck.

well... i've heard, from someone whose religious practices include tarot cards and the like, that anything used incorrectly can be evil.

"magic" (i put it in quotes because i believe the power is real, but it is not the only term for it) is meant to be used for the betterment of mankind. used irresponsibly, it can be dangerous.

basically... "magic", or whatever else you wanna call it (christians may refer to this power as a miracle or the Holy Spirit), is a tool given to us by Big Guns upstairs.

I don't believe tarot cards will actually do/predict anything. I also don't believe they are evil. They are just a deck of cards that randomly are drawn and "predict" things right? Nothing wrong with pretending!

you know... i used to be more inclined to agree with this train of thought... but after experiencing the use of power in the real world... it depends on the heart of the person.

i don't subscribe to beliefs very easily... i need to see them and experience them for myself first. it's real... it's all real.
