Generation Y

Post by The Aceman » Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:02 pm

According to Wikipedia, if you we're born between the years 1981 and 1995 you are part of Gen-Y.

Tidbits: 74% of employers say Gen Y workers expect to be paid more
61% say Gen Y workers expect to have flexible work schedules
56% say Gen Y workers expect to be promoted within a year
50% say Gen Y workers expect to have more vacation or personal time
37% say Gen Y workers expect to have access to state-of-the-art technology

Over half (55%) of employers over the age of 35 feel Gen Y workers have a more difficult time taking direction or responding to authority than other generations of workers.

Eighty-one percent of 18- to 25-year-olds surveyed a Pew Research Center poll said getting rich is their generation's most important or second-most-important life goal; 51% said the same about being famous.

97% own a computer
94% own a cell phone
76% use Instant Messaging.
15% of IM users are logged on 24 hours a day/7 days a week
34% use websites as their primary source of news
28% own a blog and 44% read blogs
49% download music using peer-to-peer file sharing
75% of college students have a Facebook account [16]
60% own some type of portable music and/or video device such as an iPod.

Nicknames: Generation Next (Nexgeners), iGen, Millennials, Echo Boomers

Keep in mind this did come from wikipedia, and that the actual dates for each generation is debated, and never been clearly defined since it's mostly a term used in popular culture. There is also what some people call the "MTV Generation" or "Generation XY" for people who were born between 1975 and 1987 and can relate in some ways to both generations X and Y.

I rather quote a more reputable source:

USA Today has a different take on what Gen Y expect of themselves and others in the work place.
USA Today wrote: High expectations of self: They aim to work faster and better than other workers.
High expectations of employers: They want fair and direct managers who are highly engaged in their professional development.
Ongoing learning: They seek out creative challenges and view colleagues as vast resources from whom to gain knowledge.
Immediate responsibility: They want to make an important impact on Day 1.
Goal-oriented: They want small goals with tight deadlines so they can build up ownership of tasks.
These goals and expectation seem much better to me =)

Well those don't necessarily contradict each other, they could both be true. The wikipedia poll is cited on the page, you can check it out.
