Maho Beach, St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles.

Best plane-spotting site in the world.

That runway is ridiculous, an accident waiting to happen.
Go read "Ishmael" a novel by Daniel Quinn. It will literally change your life.

No other options: no room. The runway literally goes from one end of the island to the other. That road is (I believe) the only road that cuts across the island.

No accidents have ever occurred there, though the chain link fence in the picture has been torn down by landing planes once or twice. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the fence support posts don't go very far into the ground, so the fence will just "give way" should a plane's landing carriage hit it.

The craziest runway in the world is not St. Maarten, but rather on another island of the Netherlands Antilles, Saba, just across the water from St. Maarten. Saba's runway is the shortest commercial airstrip in the world, only 1,312 feet, with sheer cliffs on each end. Only tiny "puddle-jumper" prop planes can fly there, and there's no room for error!

Kai Tak Int'l Airport is the "Babe Ruth" of plane-spotting airports. One of the busiest single-runway airports in the world, it was like flying into San Diego only on crack. Sharp, sharp right turn just before landing, a fast drop onto the runway, and (usually) strong crosswinds that forced most jumbo-jets to land almost sideways (you only think I'm kidding). You missed one way and you slammed into a mountainside; miss the other way you crashed into some skyscrapers.

This is one of the better Kai Tak videos on YouTube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=OtnL4KYVtDE& ... ed&search=

It really shows how late that sharp turn is and how much the wind wrecked havoc on planes trying to land there. You'll note the 747s nose is pointing out towards the harbor when it actually touches down for landing.

Here's a good picture of the hard bank before landing:

Here's a good picture of the gusty winds toying with a jumbo jet (this plane somehow landed):

I'm amazed there was never a major disaster at Kai Tak. Lot of fun to watch, though.

Speaking of Airplanes, have any of you ever seen the movie Memphis Belle? If not, you should check it out, it's a great movie.
