I like the early to mid 80's. The years from 80 to 87 in my opinion showed unparalled growth in show design. '80 was the first year we really had asymetric drill with SCV. '82 and '83 Garfield made the activity change the way it was being judged yet again. '87 SCV was probably the last as close to perfectly clean show as you will ever see in addition to maximizing a thematic show for the first time ever by any corps.

By the time we hit the 90's velocity is king and perfection takes a backseat. I am not saying I don't enjoy it more like this but there is a lot to say for an ultra clean show like what we saw in the 80's.

Three of your "Top 5" (plus the fourth I listed) are in my Top 5 as well.

The only place we differ is 1989. After watching both shows 1,000 times, I STILL think Phantom Regiment was better than Vanguard in 1989.

The Cadets drumline was great, but they weren't so good as to justify placing the corps as a whole ahead of SCV that year.

It's incredible, when you look through the list, the number of FANTASTIC shows that have finished second by 0.1. 87 SCV and 93 Star, for starters.

I'll admit I am very new to this ("all" I've seen was the tour of champions in the rose bowl)

However I am partial to

BD 2004...this show got me out of my seat...even at home!!!
SCV 2004, the ending hits with the chimes going of like church bells...man!!!
SCV 1999
Phantom regiment 2004

Vanguard- 85-89, 98-04

However, You can't beat Phantom's New World Symphony, The Cadets playing Appalachian Spring/Les Mis, or The Cavies playing any show from 00-04. Gotta love Spin Cycle. As much as I love people playing Ungodly Loud, the Blue Devils have never really done it for me. (Well, Maybe Channel One or West Side Story) I'm a Vanguard Fan and I'd have to say my favorite Vanguard shows are:

New Era Metropolis
Phantom
Inventions
Russian X-Mas Music (SO EXCITED FOR THIS YEAR!)
Or go waaaaaaaaaaay back to 74' or whenever they played Festive...
Gotta Love Bottle Dance too.

I have noticed that as well. I really don't think that I am playing the underdog card here, those shows were simply phenomenal. There are a lot of other shows that took second that could have easily won, but none of them compare to the travesties that happened in '87 and '93. How in the world Phantom beat Star in GE visual in '93 still blows my mind. Phantom had a very nice show that year but there was no question it was a distant third.

Hmm as for 2nd place shows...I think Cavies should have won in 03. I know all of you will disagree with me but thats how I feel.

So here's a question for you guys, out of all the ties for 1st, who do you think should been the lone champion?
