The most powerful moment in DCI...
What is the most powerful moment in a DCI show that really just sticks out in your memory???
For me...It was watching 87 SCV hit the Great Gate of Kiev push at Camp Randall Stadium. POWER, redefined in my mind.

One of these days I will see that show.
Hm, power... meaning VOLUME or meaning emotional IMPACT? Powerful moments for me...
1982 Phantom, off the line ("Gates of Rome" from "Spartacus")
1986 Blue Devils, start of show: "Channel One Suite"
1989 Vanguard, finale: "Music of the Night"
1989 Phantom, finale to "New World Symphony"
1990 Star of Indiana, finale to "Belshazzar's Feast"
1991 Phantom, finale: "Bacchanale"
1991 Star of Indiana, disappearing/reappearing cross drill in the finale
1993 Phantom, big crescendo at the end of "Fire of Eternal Glory"
1993 Cadets, sop solo in "Ballet Sacra" as the battery re-enters the field at a different tempo
1993 Star of Indiana, finale to "Medea's Dance of Vengeance"
1994 Blue Devils, whole show, basically (but especially the little brass ensemble in "Spanish Fantasy" leading into the final push)
1995 Vanguard, "Danse Arabe" from "The Nutcracker" (second mvt. of show)
1995 Madison Scouts, finale: "Malaga"
1995 Carolina Crown, finale: "The Storm" (from "Stormworks")
1996 Phantom, the development and resolution of the opener: "Intro to Fourth Ballet Suite"
1997 Cadets, the lightning fast runs in the first few seconds of the show
1998 Cadets, the rapidly changing flags (what, 3 different sets in 5-10 seconds?) in the middle of "Stonehenge"
1998 Vanguard, the end of the intro: "Grohg"
1999 Vanguard, the collapsing "Y" drill and finale to "Symphony #2" and tearing into "Blue Shades"
1999 Madison Scouts, "Trial & Crucifixion"
1999 Colts, finale: "Fire, Water, Paper"
2000 Cavaliers, jam session in "Niagara Falls"
2000 Cadets, show-off section at the end of the show
2001 Vanguard, the first impact in "Alarm" (genius design)
2001 Phantom, finale: "Festive Overture"
2002 Cavaliers, most of the show
2002 Blue Devils, cymbal rack festivities in middle and end of show
2002 Cadets, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"
2002 Magic, finale to "The Wind and the Lion"
2003 Phantom, crab-step with a hop, rest of finale: "Mikrokosmos"
The 1999 shows hold a special place because I was there. The Colts Drum Major (Emily Neuendorf) absolutely fell apart emotionally at the end of the show, and it certainly is easy to understand why. Powerful ending, a lot of the 7-12 corps that year were outstanding. The hometown crowd went berserk at several parts in Madison's show, but they deserved it. I thought the "Trial & Crucifixion" sequence near the end was possibly the moment of the evening. If not, Vanguard definitely had it: the most energetic, "sold" performance I've ever seen in person. EVER.
So many great memories. If I had to rank the top five, it'd go like this:
#5 - 1991 Phantom Regiment, "Bacchanale" (finale)
#4 - 1994 Blue Devils, brass ensemble leading into "Spanish Fantasy" (finale)
#3 - 1996 Phantom Regiment, "Intro to Fourth Ballet Suite"
#2 - 1989 Phantom Regiment, "New World Symphony" (finale)
#1 - 1993 Star of Indiana, "Medea's Dance of Vengeance" (finale)

Phantom...
I was speaking in terms of raw emotional impact...sorry for the confusion.
91 Star's drill in the finale...yikes...that's definately another one in my books.
95 Madison- If you had a chance to hear this show live, it was definately a "drum corps fans dream"...The entire show was an emotional high!!!
98 SCV-GROHG. I didn't think Anyone would pick that one out...but you know...that was a pretty evil opening impact.
89 PR- Finale was pretty sik.
Oh, and Emily...she is awesome. One of the nicest, truest people that I have ever met, along with Tommy, from PR.

Re: Phantom...
Not just the opening impact (which is gorgeous and dark), but also the finale of the first movement. Starting with the battery running around those brass circles.Clusknay wrote:98 SCV-GROHG. I didn't think Anyone would pick that one out...but you know...that was a pretty evil opening impact.
I fully intend to buy some historical series DVDs once I've finished moving and have some loose coin to throw around.
Opener/closer.
What was cool...design wise about the end of the opener, and the end of the closer...was that they were mirror images of each other, not to mension, extremely hard horn licks(mellos), and pretty brisk drill movements at 190bpm ...
But anyhow...back to topic.

1995 Madison Scouts is liveliest, most energetic DCI show ever. You can barely HEAR the last minute of the show because the standing ovation started long before they finished.TMR Quint Kid wrote:Hmm, I have the Part Dos show on mp3, but I only saw the 95 show once, I think I am going to find a copy of that show again, I haven't seen it for a while...Phantom Phan wrote:Good call.bari_benzo wrote:The last 1 minute of MS's 1995 program.
yep.
True dat Phantom...
The rotating company front...after that...mass hysteria.
Pretty solid "moments" through that entire show though...
How about the tossing of the cymbals on the field? The soloists throughout the show...yikes. Goosebump city.

Re: yep.
Yep, that show has it all. Scorching opener, screaming soloists, rockin' drum solo, and possibly the most energizing finale ever created. That's why I consider 1995 Scouts better than 1997 Scouts. 97 Scouts had a lot of high spots and another tremendous finale, but the 95 show simply has NO down moments. At all.Clusknay wrote:True dat Phantom...

Yeah, the 95 Madison show was absolutely the craziest thing I've ever seen/felt in my 13 years of being a drum corps fan. I think one of their guard members summed it up best when he broke his flag pole over his knee and proceeded to destroy the turf with the broken ends during the final cord. That show will be with me the rest of my life... damn, now I need to go find my DVD and watch the show again.
