Last season I decided to post weekly RPI rankings for bands competing in WBA. I thought I might give it a shot too for this Drum Corps season.

The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) was a system created by the NCAA for the purpose of ranking sports teams based on the win/loss percentages of the team their opponents. A fellow fan named Nathan Pratt from indianamarching.com devised a way of applying this system to marching band competitions using the following criteria:

1. For each group a band beats in competition,a win is recorded. Conversely, for each group a band loses to in competition, a loss is recorded.
2. If a band ties with another band, then a .5 win and .5 loss is recorded for each band.
4. Scores have no bearing on rankings.
5. The formula used to find RPI rankings can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratings_Percentage_Index

Since RPI depends solely on competition results, the numbers at the beginning will be a little off. However, as the season progresses and more shows are added, the rankings will become more accurate. If you have any questions, shoot me a PM and I'll try to give you an answer.
