"Thunderous Goo" may be the most appropriate musical term ever invented. Couldn't have said it better myself. From DCP:

I ordinarily try to avoid ranting online, but today I have an observation and a couple of questions...

Having just attended my first show of the season, I couldn't help but notice that virtually every corps is using synthesizers primarily as "thunderous goo" machines. That is, you don't hear them very much during the quiet passages, but they come roaring in with low-end-cranked-to-11 during the crescendos. In fact, during several of the pushes I found that I had trouble hearing the hornlines.

At the Stockton show last night, the only corps that didn't utilize thunderous goo were BDC, Renegades, and BK. I wonder if part of the problem is that the soundfolks behind the knobs aren't in the line of speaker-fire like those of us in the stands, and can't tell how loud it is? (that's question #1). Anyhow, I found it distracting and serving only to add mush and obfuscate the horns. I certainly would have preferred to hear more of BD's hornline, for example, but it was literally drowned out during the climaxes - at least from where I was sitting in the premium seats on the 50.

And what about the future -- thunderous goo surely can't withstand the test of time, can it? (that's question #2).

If DCI would allow some contact form someone in the stands to the sound guy, this would probably be better.

And it should also improve as hornlines reach their maximum potential later in the season.

I'll let you know from Indy next month.

I'm pretty sure communication is allowed between someone in the stands and the guy running the board. A friend of mine teaches a DCI pit and runs the board. He told me that he's communicating via cell phone to someone in the stands.
