READING BUCCANEERS ANNOUNCE 2010 PRODUCTION

“ROME” TO BUILD ON 2009 SUCCESSES

Winter Rehearsal Camp #1 Set for December 5 & 6

READING, PA (November 29, 2009) – The nine-time and five-time-defending Drum Corps Associates world champion Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce the corps’ 2010 production, ROME. The musical and visual program will present audiences with a vivid picture of the glory, grandeur and mystique of ancient Rome.

Opening the production and recurring throughout as a rhythmic and mood-setting thread will be music with a Mediterranean and North African feel inspired by the landmark HBO series Rome. Using unique brass and percussion textures, the Buccaneers will use musical imagery to provide an unmistakable sense of place and intrigue as the show progresses.

The production will continue with rich, dramatic and highly visual selections from two legendary works by Ottorino Respighi: The Pines of Rome, Movement IV – “The Pines of the Appian Way” and Roman Festivals, Movement I – “Games at the Circus Maximus.” Look for lots of layering of brass and percussion voices and the dramatic intensity of the visual program, highlighted by the Buccaneers color guard.

The Buccaneers will next offer audiences an opportunity to catch their breath with a moment of serenity and beauty, as the corps will present the lyrical and emotional aria “Vide Cor Meum” by Irish composer Patrick Cassidy. The corps will explore the use of soloists and small ensembles and unique voicing in the horn line and front ensemble.

The program will come to a rousing and triumphant conclusion as the corps returns to Respighi’s Roman Festivals, Movement IV – “The Epiphany.” This will be a vintage Buccaneers ending, kicked up a notch or two, with each section on full display presenting vivid musical and visual imagery of ancient Rome for drum corps fans to remember long after the show has concluded.

According to Program Coordinator Rich Hammond, this year’s program will offer performers and audiences all they’ve come to expect from a Buccaneers production, yet in a slightly different way that moves Buccaneers program design in a new direction. “As always, we will put together a show that emphasizes our ‘total team’ concept of excellence in every caption, in every section. We will also build on our success at the coordination of the brass, percussion, color guard and visual elements into one cohesive package,” said Hammond. “But we’ll also make a slight departure that brings our show design to a new level. We’ll explore theatrical and dramatic elements and look to paint a picture musically and visually, with the visual element not limited to just drill. This will be a new challenge for us as designers and teachers and for our members, which we think will translate well into a show that’s fun to perform and a blast for the audience to experience.”

The Buccaneers will host Winter Camp #1 on Saturday December 5, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and December 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., for brass and percussion players. Both rehearsal camps will be held at Twin Valley High School, Elverson, PA. All brass and percussion players interested in membership in the 2010 Reading Buccaneers are invited to attend.
