From a Dynasty Newsletter,

Dynasty USA / Blue Devils
Dynasty announces the end of an era with the Blue Devils organization. “The Blue Devils have been an amazing partner over the last 10 years. The organizations competition record has set new standards in the drum corps activity and Dynasty was proud to provide the equipment to make them a force over the last decade. The Blue Devils have been a huge part in helping us produce the finest Brass and Percussion instruments on the market. The Blue Devils have pursued many avenues over the last couple of years to create a stronger identity for their organization. The business endeavors of the organization are not in line with maintaining Dynasty’s current market plan. We wish the best for the Blue Devils and look forward to pursuing exciting new avenues for the growth of Dynasty USA." said Mark Schafer President of Dynasty USA.

Rumors on the BD forums have the Devils switching to King brass and Pearl percussion in 2010.

The Blue Devils are now playing Pearl/Adams for percussion and Conn-Selmer (King) for their brass.

Yeah... I've played on the Dynasty horns. They're not good... Not at all.

To each, his own. King still makes the best mellophone ever! And even though Corps don't march Sousa's. You can't go wrong with a Conn 20K!

I think the Conn 20K sounds better than any of the shoulder-cannons DCI uses. Just IMO.

Absolutely true! You won't get an argument from any quality military, university, college, or high school band director. Anyone who understands brass pedagogy and the acoustic properties of sousaphones vs contras, could explain the differences in great detail.

I'll defer to vore or Bandmaster or someone else on this one since, while I could provide a few specifics, my opinion primarily comes from the old brass player adage of "you know it when you hear it." 8-)

Here is an introduction to brass acoustics to get you started... you will find some information listed that will help answer your questions.

http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/brassacoustics.html

The larger size and quick flare of the sousaphone bell compared to the contra and/or shoulder concert tuba bell has a lot to do with it.

Hold up a marching mellophone and compare the shape and quick flare of its bell with that of marching horn. There is a reason for the strong projection of a mellophone vs a marching horn. The quick flare of the mellophone bell has a great deal to do with its projection.

The quick flare of the mellophone bell is similar to the quick flare of the sousaphone bell.

Physics majors and engineers will enjoy this...
