Hostrauser's DCI Rankings -- Week 1 (06/29/09)

Post by Hostrauser » Mon Jun 29, 2009 8:57 am

Here's my first weekly rankings. A reminder: these ranking take into consideration actual and estimated performance scores for every single day during the week. Thus, the more times a corps performs, the lower their standard deviation. Also, just because corps A beat corps B on Saturday does not mean corps A will be ranked higher if they lost to corps B on Mon, Tue, Wed, and Thr.

Just curious, how do you estimate performance scores?

Based on the average score growth of the corps that did compete, with outliers removed.

A really simple, generic example:

Day 1:
70.0 Corps A
69.0 Corps B
68.0 Corps C

Day 2:
70.8 Corps A
69.2 Corps C

Since Corps A increased by 0.8 and Corps C increased by 1.2, the average score growth from Day 1 to Day 2 was 1.0. Thus, Corps B's estimated score for Day 2 would be 70.0.

This helps insure the rankings stay consistent and that every corps is affected by judging anomalies. Another example, a little more complicated...

Day 1:
70.0 Corps A
69.0 Corps B
68.0 Corps C

Day 2:
60.0 Corps A
56.0 Corps C

Day 3:
72.0 Corps A
70.5 Corps B
69.0 Corps C

It wouldn't be fair to take a straight average of the scores: since Corps B skipped the Day 2 show with the critical judges, their average score for just Days 1 and 3 would be artificially high. Instead, by applying the average score drop of 11 points from Day 1 to Day 2, Corps B gets an estimated score (58.0) that keeps their overall average in line with the other corps they regularly competed against.

Um, no they don't. Blue Devils have the highest score so far (81.65 at Stockton).

That said, I think Crown has a very good chance of becoming the first non-championship winning corps to appear in the Top 3 since 1994 Phantom Regiment. I'd love it if they do win. According to those who have seen them, Crown's show has a TON of difficulty, and the only question is whether they can reach the Blue Devils'/Cadets'/Cavaliers' usual level of end of season cleanliness.

I would also love to see either (or both!) The Academy or Troopers in Finals.

Here's another random bit of trivia I discovered...

If Crown wins this year, they become only the second corps in DCI history to win the championship without ever having placed in the Top 3 prior.

The other corps? The Anaheim Kingsmen.

Yep. Other possible Crown factoids...

Last first-time Champion: 1996 Phantom Regiment
Last Top 3 finish for a non-Championship winning corps: 1994 Phantom Regiment.

The "Big Seven": Blue Devils, Cadets, Cavaliers, Madison Scouts, Phantom Regiment, Star of Indiana, Santa Clara Vanguard

Last time a non-"Big Seven" corps made the Top 3: 1980

Think about that last one. Only seven different corps have finished in the Top 3 over the past 28 years.
