was it coltrane who said "you can play a shoestring if you're sincere"? But there is a line. At some point, getting paid to play on lesser quality instruments will hurt. Whether it's in durability, sonority, or whatever, it will come around if they are, in fact, not as good. DOes anyone here think the corps' hornlines sound as full as they used to? NOPE. Do the stadiums sell any less tickets? Not sure. The change from bugles to concert instrument didn't seem to matter much. SOund changed, but the people still bought CD's and DVD's. Phantom Regiment is one corps that can use the endorsement from what I hear. I bet if we all made a donation to them on the condition they went back to big fat open G-horns, they'd do it. We could try...

trumpetdiva wrote:One of our music teachers made the mistake of buying a fiberglass Jupiter Sousa about 10 years ago...what a disaster. I would never have ordered it myself.

Now LAUSD isn't repairing Selmer woodwinds anymore and is only repairing Yamaha and Jupiter woodwinds. All of my woodwind instruments are Selmer and I already had a alto sax sent back from the repair shop, unrepaired, because they don't carry the parts.

So in order to be able to have my instruments repaired by LAUSD, I started ordering Jupiter woodwinds. I recently bought 2 Jupiter tenors and 1 Bari sax. The tenors have held up during the last 5 months though the laquer scratches easily. But less than 2 weeks after receiving the Bari sax, my student, while trying to tune the bari, bent the neck almost in half. I was in front of him watching and the neck bent like it was made of clay...Scared the crap out of both of us

This is something that had never happened with any of the Selmer's we've used for years. Mind you, this is an instrument that costs several thousand dollars.

So when people say Jupiter is much better now, I would still be extremely hesitant to order anything Jupiter.

Lesson learned
As the old commercial for Framm Oil Filters used to say..."Pay me now or pay me later." By buying junk one usually pays for it later...

Don't buy instruments named after planets.

And we shouldn't drink Super Bathtub Gulps of Diet Coke either...but we do.

Maybe someone should ask RV the reason why they chose Jupiter?

Or, let's listen to PR this summer, and then ask RV AFTER the season and see how he feels about the instruments.

Personally I like the Jiffy Lube slogan - Lube it or lose it

I played on those horns last year at NAMM and true they aren't the worst horns out there, and obviously I knew Phantom and JD Shaw would be customizing them to meet their needs. These won't be the same Jupiters that a high school band would be buying though when they hear the great sound I'm sure PR will get. So buyer obviously beware.

I think we all have admired PR's brass sound for years, and always thought highly of the Kings they were on as knowing them for quality instruments. I guess we'll see and hear in the summer.

And for me, double A, honk honk, M, C, O.

In the arena of sports, Easton is the leading baseball bat manufacturer. During the college world series, all the teams have their favorite bat, and retailers usually see a spike because of all the ESPN coverage. Sad part is, Easton takes a second rate bat, paints them the same as the college teams, and makes a GIANT profit. Customizing for the big boys, then doing the ol' bait and switch is a tried and true technique to bilk big dollars from average Joe. Sad but true.

no way, slogans from car companies, much like new slogans for wierd horn endorsements...see?

"Jupiter, there's no life, but it's BIG!"

That works for their instruments too!
