My son director wants him to play a solo for our spring concert. We have been going through a lot of pieces. We still have not came across the right piece he likes. Their all to dull he says. He wants something upbeat snazzy. He's a third year bass tuba player. Can anyone help him?

Well, I don't know how advanced a player your son is but I've heard a great arrangement of Vittorio Monti's dance for Tuba solo with brass band called Csardas ( or Czardas, depends how its translated ). Its a hungarian gypsy song that will put any good tuba player through their paces.

Tuba Tiger Rag arranged by Luther Henderson is another piece thats well known and a lot of fun to play as well.

If I played Tuba, I'd learn "Flight of the Bubmlebee!"

Vaughn Williams Tuba Concerto.
I play Tuba and i cannot think of a better piece.
Either that or the Tuba Polka by Canadian Brass.

Yeah, I agree. But, if not that, convince your director to play an arrangement of Gliere's Russian Sailors Dance...or make your own. A few good recordings can be found here: http://www.blackburnhs.vic.edu.au/musweb/audio/. Happy hunting!

either Flight of the Tuba bee or Tuba Polka, they are both by Canadian Brass and are very good and fairly hard.
