Hi I was wondering what your guys favorite suites were in hs or college my favorite was English Folk Song Suite wich we recently played last year at pearson park with our 2nd band. I like the 3rd suite wich we played for honor band also and First Suite in Eb wich i heard our top band play it last year for festival. The only one I liked all the 3 movements was in Folk Song Suite because the 2nd movement was the best out of the other 2 suites 2nd movement. and also it was the one I enjoyed playing the most

Folk Song Suite is fantastic. The two marches that bookend the piece are outstanding.

I have always liked the William Byrd Suite, and I also enjoy Suite Francais.
But I really dig the suite from West Side Story. Nothing like complicated rhythms and mind boggling chromaticism to make for good concert music.

Suite Provencale by Darius Milhaud is also outstanding.

"Suite Francaise" is by Darius Milhaud. "Suite Provencale" is by Jan Van der Roost.

Milhaud also wrote a "Suite Provencale" (op. 152a), and I think it's better than his "Suite Francaise" (op. 248).

The band arrangement is only three of the suite's eight (or so) movements, I think movements I, IV and VI are the ones in the band arrangement.

If one is good, two is better

Milhaud and Van der Roost both wrote compositions called "Suite Provencal" There is also another Suite Francaise by Francis Poulenc.

I could list about 40 suites that I love. That number would be larger had I not eliminated suites from Ballets, etc. and stayed with music that was wriiten as a suite.

Here are a few.

Le Tombeau de Couperin-Ravel (orch)
Nocturnes-Debussy (orch)
The Planets-Holst (band/orch)
Terpsichore-Margolis (band)
Original Suite-Jacob (band)
Of Sailor and Whales-McBeth (band)
Thirds Suite-Jager (band)
Suite of Old American Dances-Bennett (band)

gotta love Robert Russell Bennet's Suite of Old American Dances. Although not technically that difficult a very mature piece of done correctly.

And, although not officially titled a "suite" gotta' love my perennial favorite, Lincolnshire Posey.

Folk Song Suite is just about my all time favorite concert piece, we're considering playing it for one of our festivals this year

we played this for a little while last year, we just called it "the very very french song." It's nice, but very VERY French,
