Favorite Concert Pieces

I would have to say that "Appalachian Spring," by Copland is a great piece, and on top of that is "On the Waterfront," by Bernstein. I would have to say that those two composers, Bernstein and Copland are two of the greatest composers, in my opinion, of all time. But that is just my Personal opinion...

I really like Clare Grundman's medlies. The first one I got to play was "The Blue and The Gray." He really knows how to integrate songs together, and the voicing is perfect!
I can't stand Holsinger!! HE MUST DIE!!!!!
We did Gershwin (Cuban Overture, Concerto in F, a very very small part of Rhapsody in Blue) for marching band last season. I wish we could get semi-simple concert band arrangements. I want the piano solos!!!

"And the Trogdor smote the Kerrick, and all was laid to Burnination."
Why? I have played three Grundman pieces, three years in a row, and they are very bland and boring. I do not like Grundman at all. I played "American Folk Rhapsody," 1 and 2, and "Variations on American Sailing Songs" I think that is it at least. I just do not like the fact that three pieces that I played were all variations on other pieces. Plus, they were very, very, very, very, etc... Boring. Anyways. Yeah, that is just my Personal opinion.smdrummajor03 wrote:I really like Clare Grundman's medlies.

Suite of Old American Dances is by Robert Russell Bennett, and yes, it's a terrific piece. I played it back in my band days, too.Dune00z wrote:I like a piece we played last year called Suit of Old American Dances. I cant remember the composer tho but it was really cool. Download it, it a pretty sick concert peice. I liked playing it.

One of Ralph Vaughan Williams's better pieces. EFSS is solid.O'sideband_lizzy wrote:1st- English Folk Song Suite (all 3 movements)
The one by W. Francis McBeth, I'm assuming?O'sideband_lizzy wrote:4th- Masque
I still stand by the assertation that the lesser known Symphonic Dance #2 - The Maskers by Clifton Williams is even better than #3 - Fiesta. I wish more people were playing it.O'sideband_lizzy wrote:5th- Symphonic Dance #3 "fiesta"
all great pieces....

Favorite Concert Piece
Hey Personal - did you go to Top Talented Honor Band this year? We played both of those. My favorite concert piece is Into The Joy of Spring by Swearingen. It's a young piece, but I totally love it. It has the best xylophone part I've ever been allowed to play! It makes me happy just thinking about it. (man, I'm a band nerd) Someone said Vesuvius by Tiachelli. I like that too, but I've never played it with concert band - it was our winter line show.Personal wrote: I am a Personal fan of "First Suite in Eb", and "Second Suite in F".

I've never played that piece, and I'm glad you enjoyed your part...cutenerd17 wrote:My favorite concert piece is Into The Joy of Spring by Swearingen.
That said, I'm of the opinion that ALL of James Swearingen's music should be bundled up, sent to Seattle, and used in the fish markets.
Swearingen. Ugh.
Re: Favorite Concert Piece
No I did not, but I have played 2nd suite with my band, and 1st suite in the San Bernadino All County Honor band last year. I am just a big Holst fan. The planets...oh man... I mean Mars and Jupiter are my favorites, but the others are awsome also.cutenerd17 wrote:Hey Personal - did you go to Top Talented Honor Band this year?Personal wrote: I am a Personal fan of "First Suite in Eb", and "Second Suite in F".

A lot of concert pieces we've performed in the past that are my favorites:
Arnold (English Dances Set II and Three Scottish Dances)
Persichetti (Masquerade, Pageant, Symphony, Divertimento)
Grainger (Lincolnshire Posy, Shepherd's Hey, Children's March, Colonial Song)
Holst (Jupiter)
Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue)
Shostakovich (Prelude Opus. 23?, ? Dances)
Charles Ives (some symphony piece)
Holsinger (On Ancient Hymns and Festal Dances, which was a hard piece of literature with a ton of time signature changes. Had a ton of fun playing it tough.)
