Phantom Phan wrote:To Tame the Perilous Skies is an awesome piece, one of Holsinger's best. However, I think I'd rank it as my third favorite, behind Liturgical Dances and the truly awesome and vastly under-performed The Armies of the Omnipresent Otserf.
Wildabeast wrote:What? No Ballet Sacra or In the Spring, At the Time When Kings Go Off To War?
Nah. The Cadets accomplished more with those pieces in 1993 than I thought possible. Ballet Sacra isn't a BAD piece... a little over-long and not as solidly composed as Perilous Skies, though. ItS,AtTWKGOTW simply isn't that great of a piece, in my opinion. One or two good melodies in another over-long piece. When you're talking about the concert band setting, Perilous Skies, Otserf, Liturgical Dances, Abram's Pursuit and Homage: Three Tapestries are ALL better Holsinger pieces, in my opinion.

I played a piece with a Shenandoah excerpt in it, but I wouldn't mind playing the entire piece some time. It really is a beautiful piece.

I like to read from the Arbon's book, and play it on my Euph. It proves to be interesting...

Tempered Steel is by Charles Rochester Young, and I agree, it's a great piece.

Bolero (at least, the most famous version) is by the immortal Maurice Ravel.

Bolero, is definitely a great piece. Off the topic, but if you get to see Blast, they do an excellent rendition of Bolero. Rhapsody in Blue, is definitely a classic, and I think is one of the best pieces ever written. I wish that I could play some day. That would be awsome.

I love Rhapsody in Blue. Indeed, it would be awsome to play, especially the clarinet solo at the beginning. I probably suck too much to be able to play it though.
