Congratulations once again to RB High for continued musical excellence.

From San Diego Union-Tribune:

All-State Band picks 12 from Rancho Bernardo High

March 7, 2004

A dozen Rancho Bernardo High School students were named to the 2004 All State Honor Band recently, earning the school the distinction of having the most students in the band.

Music lovers will get a chance to hear the home-grown talent during a community concert March 21 as part of a fund-raising effort for the high school's music building campaign.

The student musicians traveled to Fresno last month with Rancho Bernardo music director Tom Cole to participate in music clinics, rehearsals and a concert at the California Band Directors Association annual convention.

More than 850 high school students from throughout the state auditioned for the honor and 300 were selected, including two from Westview and seven from Mt. Carmel in Rancho Peñasquitos.

Westview students selected for the honor band are Alex Horwitz and So Yeon Choe. Mt. Carmel students are Elise Xavier, Matthew Russell, Tiffany White, Alex Kort, Dan Findley, Ivan Cheong and Rachel Barnhart.

Schools were allowed to submit audition tape recordings for up to 12 musicians. Rancho Bernardo was the only school to have the maximum number of students chosen for the honor band.

"It's very rare for a school to have every single student (who auditions) selected," said Sindi Raya of the band directors association. "It's really something to have that many top-notch musicians make the cut."

The Rancho Bernardo students in the honor band are Luke Diebolt, Zack Marty, Hannah Dubina, Logan Chopyk, Ryan Weston, Dora Skidmore, Adam Wolf, Lauren Waidelich, Steve Barr, George Himmel, Andrew Goldman and Pranita Suvarna.

The students will perform as part of Rancho Bernardo wind ensemble and orchestra concert at 4 p.m. March 21, at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, 17010 Pomerado Road.

Admission is free, but donations for the high school music building fund will be accepted.

The Rancho Bernardo High School Music Boosters club is trying to raise $770,000 to build a 5,000-square-foot addition to the performing arts center. The building would house a rehearsal hall, office space and storage rooms.

The fund-raising campaign, which began in June 2002 with $200,000 from the estate of Margaret Ford Renninger, is about $130,000 short of the goal. The original target completion date of 2004 has been pushed back and the music boosters hope to break ground by next spring.
