Pacific Basin Festival - Hawaii

Post by Khan » Fri Jan 30, 2004 11:50 pm

Speaking of Hawaii, how about the Pacific Basin Festivalin Honolulu this March (20-25). This is a concert band and choir competition, hosted by World Projects, which features student bands primarily from Pacific Rim nations, but has had participants from all over the world.
I'm headed there with Leigh High School's (San Jose, CA) Wind Ensemble and Madrigals choir in a few short weeks. It's Leigh's second trip to this festival after a very successful showing in 2001. Concord HS also made the trip that year along with groups from Alaska, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Are any other CA bands planning the trip this year?

California Gold Rush!

Post by Khan » Thu Apr 01, 2004 11:36 pm

Congratulations are in order for Leigh High School and Napa High School for their stellar performances in Hawaii last week. Leigh's Wind Ensemble won a Gold Medal for its performance (the only gold awarded to a concert band at the festival) as well as the Command Performance as the top band. Leigh's Madrigals Choir also earned a Gold Medal and shared the Command Performance honor with Napa's Concert Choir, also a Gold Medal winner! In fact, all four choirs Napa brought to the festival won gold: a pretty amazing feat for a very large choral department at Napa!

Competitors at the event also came from high schools in Alaska, British Columbia, New Zealand, and an honor band from Guam, but it was the Californians who stole the show!

Here's Leigh's Wind Ensemble immediately before their Command Performance at the gorgeous Hawaii Theater in downtown Honolulu.
