Pomona Concert Band Announces Annual Spring Concert

The Pomona Concert Band announces its Annual Spring Concert to be held at the Palomares Park Community Center, 499 E. Arrow Hwy in Pomona on Friday, May 11th, at 7:30 pm. Mr. Edmund Fry, of the Rose Tree Cottage in Pasadena, will be the Master of Ceremonies. A special feature of the evening will be a piece that was written exclusively for the band by British composer Rodney Newton. The concert is sponsored by the City of Pomona.

The title of the concert is "American Heritage." All of the music presented will reflect our countries great heritage. Some of the numbers that the band will play are "The Great Waldo Pepper March" by Henry Mancini, "Amazing Grace" by Frank Ticheli, "Fanfare and Flourishes" by James Curnow, "Selections from West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein, "Esprit de Corps" by Robert Jager, "Gershwin on Broadway" by John Moss and "Bullets and Bayonets" by John Philip Sousa.

The very special feature of this concert will be the world premier of "A Walt Whitman Symphony," composed exclusively for “Linda Taylor and the Pomona Concert Band.” Mr. Newton is the composer in residence for the Coldstream Guards Military Band in England and is a highly regarded composer in the United Kingdom. He will attend the dress rehearsal of the symphony to give the band some final pointers and will be in attendance at the concert.

The symphony is in four movements and is inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman for its different symphonic moods and musical variety. Mr. Newton also pays tribute to American folk songs, bits of which pop up unexpectedly throughout the piece. The work is an homage to American music and culture as seen through the eyes of a British composer, and as such makes for an alluring, intense, rich and rewarding listening experience.

This promises to be an evening filled with great music and a lot of fun. The concert is FREE to the public, so bring your family, friends and neighbors for a great evening of entertainmentand be part of a 'World" premier. This is a 1st for the Pomona Concert Band. There will be a reception in Mr. Newton’s honor following the concert. If you have never been to one of the Pomona Band’s spring concerts, this is the one to attend.

The Pomona Concert Band is under the baton of Linda W. Taylor, Conductor and Musical Director, and Dr. Jorge Garcia, Assistant Conductor. Band members come from Pomona and more than twenty surrounding communities to make music together. The Pomona Concert Band was founded by G. Stanton Selby in 1947 as part of a local Pomona American Legion Post. The Band has represented the City of Pomona in countless events and performances over the years, including tours of Europe and Japan in 1985 and 1988.
