I met Roger a few times when he was still with the LA Phil... quite a character and a fantastic musician. He nows lives in Japan and is quite active as a conductor. His website makes for interesting reading with other performances, history, instruments, and articles. A must for any Tubist!

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to take lessons from Roger back in the early 70's. At $25 a half hour then, it just about broke my parents! It wasn't until years later I found out the lessons were actually $50 and my band director (Jimmy Quiroz, who drove me to LA every week after school) was paying the difference. I was blessed to be selected to perform a duet at the Bowl with Roger... I was petrified with fear, but even as we went on stage he was telling me a joke and had me laughing. It was a magical experience.

By the way, even today... some 35 years later... next to my parents, Mr. Quiroz ranks as the most influential person in my life.
