World of Pageantry

I think this piece should probably be performed much more often in the U.S. We, as a people, don't stop to just listen much any more. And this is pretty much one piece jerk parents couldn't talk through and ruin for others around them (can you tell I had a concert recently?). Even if they did, that sound would be considered part of the performance.

Of course, I'm a big fan of minimalism, so that probably tempers my opinion. My wife is continually flummoxed by how I can listen to Steve Reich repeat a rhythm with very little change for minutes on end, but dismiss lots of popular music as repetitive and boring.

If it were being performed in a public venue, then I hope they would at least emphasize that it is a modernist concert. Personally, my favorite part of the video is the coughing that takes place in between movements. Does silence just beg to be coughed at?

I had always heard of this piece... but never seen it. At S.J.S.U. we did a piece called "Rockytop Sreamers and Various Scapes" by
Dr. Allen Strange, which involved graphic notation and the contudtor "conductiing" each 5 minutte interval of time.

I'm performing this for my Theory of Knowledge class. I didn't want to pay the $5.95 so I decided to re-write it myself in Sibelius. I hope won'tbe a copywright infringement lawsuit coming...

haha, it must take real maturity to sit there and perform it, moreso than watching it. Heck, if I had an instrument in my hand and had to sit still for almost 5 minutes...

I used to use this piece when I taught music theory as an example of my definition of music,

...the organization of sound and silence...

Consequently, anything can be music and this proves it. That doesn't mean I like it. My musical tastes are much more conservative than that.

Personally, I think John Cage was a comedian at heart.
