Rise and Shine
I've not heard Rise and Shine in a gazillion years (maybe two gazillion). For those who don't know it, it's a concert march (by Donald Moore?) and one by one each section is featured. As I recall, the featured section is supposed to stand, hence "Rise and Shine".

LOTS of fun!

Had a theory class or studied music much? Holst's First Suite is a great piece. It's monstrously over-played and I'm damn tired of hearing it, but from a compositional perspective it... is... SOLID.

Agreed. It's very well written, and while I could go for a long time without hearing it and be completely happy, it is a very good educational tool, which is why it's used so often. Same witth his Second Suite in F... That one is a bit more entertaining to my ears though.

Edit...I forgot I was going to post a question...

We forgot a whole genre!

We must not forget about musical satire and the amazing workings of PDQ Bach. Try "Grand Serenade for an Awful Lot of Winds and Percussion" nothing is better than playing the high "G" on clarinet, having a bassoon REED solo, and gargling the middle "C".

I think you mean Johan de Meij?

Ira Hearshen is a very clever composer/arranger. Unless you're lucky to even find a recording of it (:nerd:), his de-rangement of "There's No Business Like Show Business" is quite good. The "elders" of this forum might find it very refreshing.
