I don't think I have heard this before. Does anyone have a recording they can post up?
You can hear a portion of it on the itunes store (University of Georgia Wind Ensemble). They allow you to purchase all the individual songs on the album except this one. :x

Well, from what I heard, this is a pretty nice song. Sounds like it would be fun to play. Thanks for the info about finding it.

Has anyone ever worked with a contemporary composer for a world premier with your band? Are there composers still working for wind ensemble v. orchestra?

This last year at the CBDA convention, there were three works commissioned (one for each of the all state honor bands) that were premiered at the concert. Michael Torke, Frank Ticheli and Carolyn Bremer were the 3 composers and at the end of one of our rehearsals our director asked us for feed back on the piece which he would then relay to Mr. Torke. So we kinda worked with the composer in an indirect sort of way.

On a side note, that Torke piece was a total bear. It was like playing the Bolero excerpt for 10 minutes :crying:

Harsona I was in the all-state wind ensemble with you...I was the percussionist who played timpani on Gloriosa...what do/did you play?

...getting back to the topic...

At the 2007 All-Southern California Honor Band/Convention, the wind ensemble performed the world premiere of "Variations on a Familiar Tune," which was composed by Ira Hearschen (sp?) for that group. He came and watched a rehearsal for a while, and I imagine he gave more feedback to Larry Curtis than he did to us directly...

does that sort of count?

I also know that a couple of years ago, several schools, including CSU Fullerton and Rancho Buena Vista HS collectively commissioned a piece by David Maslankas (sp?)...I heard the Fullerton wind ensemble play it and it was pretty intense...
My heart's numbered beat
still echoes in this empty room
and fear wells in me
but nothing seems big enough to defend
so im going away, i am going away...

Lemme add Puszta to my list by Jan Van der Roost. A mighty fiesty suite of four dances.

Chorale and Shaker Dance and Folk Song Suite are now added to my list haha. Love the awesome horn-age in Chorale and Shaker Dance (even though I'm a clarinet player haha)

My two favorite peaces would have to be the pieces we played last year.

Metroplex (Crazy and so much fun to play!)

Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons (gave me goosebumps)
