is there always this many bands doing the holst suites? I mean they're great pieces and all, but from what I understand because everybody and their mother and mother's mother knows them, they're pretty hard to play convincingly at festival.

Also yes. But they're fantastically written and they're pretty accesible to bands of all skill levels, from just "average" to amazing.
