Question for dance team

Hello all,
I was a band/marching member myself years back and dance teams are fairly new to for being in a show. Before it use to be strictly flags/colorguard with the bands/corps.
So, I was wondering just how does one get on a dance team? I'm sure there are auditions that have to be done. Is there any training that a dancer needs to have or just a talent to pick up a routine and move? Is hip-hop a must?
