Ok, this is the story:
Our drumline/pit has some serious issues, one of which is with our instructor. We had a month between our first competition and our second, which is on Friday. Plenty of time, I think, to learn the rest of our music and drill. Half of our rehearsals were canceled, and the other half, well.... Our instructor either shows up late, ends rehearsal early, or both. Example, the last rehearsal we had, he showed up late, opened the door for us and then left us with a drum tech. The pit practiced with no help, and many of them are beginners.
The reasons for our cancelled practices? There are none, at least, none that anybody has been informed of.
Oh, wait, there was one reason given. One was cancelled because we didn't have new music. God forbid we should have a practice just to clean what we already know. We, literaly, haven't marched since our last competition.
Anybody out there with a similar situation? How do you deal?

hey, yeah. im an instructor at a middle school. Honestly, you sound as if you have a bad instructor. sounds like he doesnt care. best thing to do is talk to him about it and see what he says. get a one on one chat with him including all the section leaders. get a few answers to see wussup. and just hope next year you can get a better instructor.
First, talk to your band director and get his/her perspective. Sometimes there's more than one side to things, and you may not be aware of all the pertinent information. Having done that, it may bring to the director's attention any problems you're having with the instructor (or anyone else) getting the job done. It's your director's job, ultimately, to see that your line performs well - not the instructor's - so it's in his best interest to know if the guy he's paying is working well with the student or not.
