The "Dut Dut" Song

Post by Teever » Sun Dec 05, 2004 12:17 am

Hey! There's this new song out (actually, it's an oldie, but we've heard it a lot lately). Have you heard it? It goes something like this:

[band plays loudly, then stops abruptly]..."Dut, dut, dut, dut!"

I don't know who wrote it, but drumlines all over are singing it!

Sometimes you'll hear another mix of it, which goes something like this:

[band or soloist plays very quietly]..."Dut, dut, dut, dut!"

Or this one -

[conductor gives 4 or 16 silent beats, followed by] ..."DUT, DUT, DUT, DUT!!!"

This ones the best, because you can easily hear it over 400 feet away!

I know what you're thinking - not the best lyrics, right? I know, but it's got a catchy beat, and you can march to it too! Best of all, it seems to work in any style of music.

Way back when my friends and I first learned the song, we'd just sing it quietly to each other - I guess it had special meaning to us then - but now, people are shouting it to the world like gospel! Powerfull words, I guess.

Have you heard the "Dut Dut" song???

i think the reason that people "sing" it out loud nowadays (besides keeping tempo) is to get people excited, or for some sort or effects. i've seen people add "dances" or extra "lyrics" to it(i.e. dut, dut, dut, goose)

I believe the point has been made. Dut's are for yourselves, not the audience.

Hey that sounds soooo similar to that colorguard song!

This thing with guards singing is quite innovative if you ask me...

It's even more awesome when guards sing the "five and six and seven and eight and" song!!

dutting duts

Post by chickinthebattery » Mon Dec 06, 2004 8:55 pm

we used duts this year too to keep on tempo
Our drum captain could be heard on all the tapes from the box over many cymbals and other pit things. During the ballad the guard sing their 5, 6,7,8 song. Since they are so back in the field they are usually almost on the upbeat which aint so good

sub-dividing is a great way to clean up attacks, keep with the tempo, etc...but it's just not cool to hear dut's over the top of music. When was the last time you went to the theatre and heard the conductor count off? Use it as a tool but keep it professional at the same time.

Our drumline duts we just try to keep it quiet and during rests we usual do it without vocals and pretend to do it. But, there is so much noise in our show that you couldn't really hear our duts.
