Woo! Another year of solos! I have a feeling that I MAY be able to finish a Musser Etude or 2 in time, and I'm setting that as a goal.

I'm a little bothered though, I've noticed that 2-mallet solo's tend to be scored significantly lower than 4 mallet solos. I'm guessing that 4 mallet is more visual, and a lot of the critique that my friends that competed and I received was to be more animated/visual in our playing...seems like adla is more aesthetically oriented.

*ahem* you forgot Junior!! :D

Anyways, we did junior last year but our instructor is putting us in "independant open" for this season.

School:
warner middle school

Show: I don't know what it's called... I'd rather keep it secret, anyways.

Division: Independant Open

School: Villa Park High School
Theme: I'm not sure if I'm supposed to reveal it. Hint: BLING BLING!
Division: We're not sure yet! Maybe Scholastic, maybe Open
I&E: Yes sir! I'll probably be playing some Gordon Stout.

Res, I have no idea what the deal is with 2 mallet solos as I've never played one for ADLA. I noticed a little bit of the same thing with all the visual stuff. It might be different this year though since a lot of the stuff has been reformatted.

Malletragic & Res -
Don't ever sacrifice great playing technique for any kind of visual qimmick - especially in solos! I don't know who gave you that impression, but I guess I'll have to have them taken out and shot now.

Any correlation between the number of mallets you use (2, 4, 6...or 1 for that killer Chime solo piece you've been waiting to do) and scoring is PURELY coincidental.

Musser etudes and anything by G. Stout are great stuff to be studying right now - throw in some Keiko Abe and you're all set!

I'm working on some Keiko Abe right now (Variations on Japanese Childrens' Songs), but unfortunately, I don't have a 5 octave marimba to access for I&E. Also, it goes over the time limit, and I'm totally not ready to perform it (especially when I can only play 2 pages).
