hey i am interested in starting my own independent drumline. i have been thinking of this for years and i feel now would be a good time then ever to start one. i think to myself that i have thought of everything that i need to know about it but there is always something i dont know. please post some things that you might think i need to know. some tips. perferably from people who have been around the independent drumline scene

First of all, good luck. That's a really cool idea and I hope it works for you.

Funding is huge. Find sponsors (not just percussion companies, but family businesses that are willing to make some donations and support your efforts), do fund raisers, don't go crazy with spending. Try to get an instructors discount for sticks and stuff too, so you can buy in bulk and such (because we all know how easy it is to go through sticks). Also, don't go all gung ho on getting trailers and stuff. Go with Ryder or something like that, or get hookups with someone who has a truck or trailer.

A good line cannot be made without a good group of instructors. Make sure you can find instructors with chops and experience. I don't know if you are going to be one of the instructors, but it's always nice to have individual techs helping the caption head out. Good luck with your line and I hope it works out for you!

thanks for the tips. i would be one of the coaches, yes. i will deffinately hire techs for each section. but i would like to over see the whole project.

any other suggestions that anyone might have will help please feel free to put what you know.

Yeah... Rothe, Jackson, Nunez... its part of Impulse Youth arts. Its gonna be another tough contender for independent class in 2005. Looks like the age of indoor is here and independent drumlines are popping up left and right... I love it.

Probably the most important aspects of running an independent group have nothing to do with music or drumming. You must consider the following:

Who will carry the insurance? (many sites and transportation companies require it)
Will you be filing for non-profit status? (this can take a while)
Who will be handling money and signing the checks? (dual signatures are often required because they are a good way to prevent fraud)

Aside from having a great staff, these are the things that can make or break a line or corps. Too many talented groups have gone down the tubes for lack of good management.
