I welcome any feedback you may have. The two proposals are basically identical, the first is based on total number of members in the band, the second is based on total musicians.

Proposal Title: Standardization of the size of field show classifications #1
Proposed By: Brian Aguilar
Date: 5/15/10
Fiscal Impact: unknown
Impact: Re-writing the sheets to reflect name changes, less confusion about classification system, consistent classifications for competing units from show to show.

Proposal:
I propose that the NCBA adopt a standardized classification based on the number of total members in each marching band for the Field Show portion of competitions effective Fall 2010. Names of the classifications is a suggestion and can be changed as desired by the membership.

Class A No greater than 60 total members
Class AA No greater than 80total members
Class AAA No greater than 100 total members
Class AAAA No greater than 140 total members
Class AAAAA Any number of total members

Reasoning:
The varying classifications from show to show is a source of some frustration for directors, particularly those in the middle and smaller classifications. This system would allow a band know where they stand for the entire season, who they are competing against, and that at any given time they won't be going up against a band that might be significantly larger or smaller than they are. The standardization of the classifications is an idea used and proven by several other associations. There is also an option to allow a band of any size to compete in AAAAA.

Proposal Title: Standardization of the size of field show classifications #2
Proposed By: Brian Aguilar

Fiscal Impact: unknown
Impact: Re-writing the sheets to reflect name changes, less confusion about classification system, consistent classifications for competing units from show to show.

Proposal:
I propose that the NCBA adopt a standardized classification based on the number of total musicians in each marching band for the Field Show portion of competitions effective Fall 2010. Musicians is defined as any student performing a wind, brass, or percussion instrument (drum majors not counted unless they play a musical instrument in the show). Names of the classifications is a suggestion and can be changed as desired by the membership.

Class A No greater than 40 total musicians
Class AA No greater than 60 total musicians
Class AAA No greater than 80 total musicians
Class AAAA No greater than 100 total musicians
Class AAAAA Any number of total members

Reasoning:
The varying classifications from show to show is a source of some frustration for directors, particularly those in the middle and smaller classifications. This system would allow a band know where they stand for the entire season, who they are competing against, and that at any given time they won't be going up against a band that might be significantly larger or smaller than they are. Hi Brian,

I really like the first proposal for standardized sizing.
I have been very frustrated with the class size inconsistencies over the last few years.

This is among my primary reasons for competing in another circuit this coming year. I was impressed with the consistency, professionalism and courtesy I received at a few of the shows we attended this year that were not affiliated with NCBA, now I want more.

Good luck!
