Gotta love the strength and pure power horns can provide. Gotta love the timbre, texture winds have. How do you eliminate those woodwinds? My vote......................Woodwinds and horns together please!

Personally, I don't think woodwinds add much on the field. Brass and percussion are 99% of the necessary sound and timbre (for me) in field shows. So I went with drum corps.

San Jose State University has a nice mix of sound. They allow saxes in addition to the brass and percussion.

It's really tough to compare the two. Great high school and college marching bands will never be as strong as a winning drum corps because of the amount of time a drum corps has to clean, so it is easy to like drum corps better.
However, anyone who has seen Mt. Carmel this year knows that woodwinds can be very effective in a marching band show.
When woodwinds are allowed in drum corps (even though many think this would be completely unacceptable), we might be able to compare them fairly. Until that time, I vote for the textures possible with woodwinds, and the percision of every day rehearsals throughout the summer.

These are two different beasts; like comparing an orchestra to a wind ensemble. I enjoy them both.

And those who think the woods add nothing to the marching band are listening to the wrong bands....just my opinion.

I agree with Mark. Gotta be smart about "featuring" woodwinds though. many times lost in the tutti band sound. Staging has a LOT to do with sound on the field. (flutes behind the battery makes it tough to appreciate them)

Do I hear PERCUSSION in your future? :yeah: Easy transition from flute to marching bass drum or mallet instruments
