Percussion grammar aside, I will now fess up to something kinda funny. Last year on the field during a full ensemble rehearsal, I asked the woodwind section to play something for me and I quickly found the player ruining the articulation. So i was shouting out my "fixes" and noticed the kid was talking while I was talking. I tried to get the kid to tell me what so dang important. Finally, after much effort, he shouted out...
"It wasn't me, I don't even have a reed in my clarinet!"
I went on to explain it was the best tone I'd heard outta him all year.
Just goes to show we all make mistakes, and we all "hear things" that aren't there, or we miss things that are there. Life huh?
Since we're in the "Percusion Discussion" area, here...drums drums drums!

Lets be honest guys. How many times has this happened to you:
You hear a lick in the show that you think is sweet.
You go back and watch it on video or hear a recording of it and it sucked.
I can't tell you how many times it has happened to me. Especially when it comes to script in the show. I always understand it because I wrote it and know what they are saying. My brain has a tendency to cover up poor diction, and a poor eq.
How can you expect someone that has never seen your show to be perfect? Especially when you probably wrote the music, rehearse it with the group on a daily basis, and still misread the show yourself.
