Sibelius and Virtual drumline
I've been using Finale since 2002 but keep hearing about how Sibelius is extremely user friendly. I'm thinking of switching.
I'm also interested in virtual drumline but all I can come to understand is that it is just a tool for improving playback sound quality. Am I missing something?
Any feedback would be appreciated for either program.

I also use sib and VDL2 for all my percussion composing needs...
virtual drumline replaces the MIDI sounds in sib's library and replaces it with actual sounds recorded by SCV. So the snares sound like snares and the tenors sound like tenors. It is also really good for the front ensemble because you can really picky with the size of sus. cymbal on the sounds as well. I really enjoy virtual drumline.

Sibelius is definitely the best choice by far. I used to be a Finale user, but I switched over. It took me awhile to get accustomed to it because in Finale I was used to doing so many things to achieve ONE task, but in Sibelius it literally takes only one or two clicks at most to get the job done.
Add VDL 2.5 to the mix and voila!

Sib. 5 & VDL are definitely the way to go! I save SO much time when writing now because of the easy interface...not to mention I get incredible playback for my students to practice to!
Having the live sounds has GREATLY reduced rewrites as well.
It is worth the money to switch and the time to learn how to use it, trust me!

I've been using Finale since 2001/2002, upgraded to 2004, then upgraded to 2005 and now I am on 2008. Finale 2008 has really stepped it up and is so much easier now. I believe this version is very comparable to Sib now in terms of functionality and features. I've also been using VDL since it first came out and with Finale 2008 and VDL 2.5, my work has been A WHOLE LOT EASIER, FASTER and FUN... both behind the PC and in front of the line! hahaha. So for you die hard Finale users... check out Finale 2008 before switching over... just my opinion.

I started with Sibelius 4.2, and ever since, I have upgraded to Sibelius 5.1. Good program! I definately am glad I switched from Finale to Sibelius. Only thing I liked with Finale though, was its playback quality. Amazing if you have 2007-2008. But Sibelius gets it done faster (as long as you know the simple keyboard shorcuts.) hope this was helpful.Sirsplitalot wrote:i would also like to know what people use... i have the sibelius demo and its ok, but probably cuz its a demo... so yea, what do people prefer!?

Re: Sibelius and Virtual drumline
I got Sibelius 5.2 for my birthday in August. It's fantastic. If I knew anything at all about writing for marching percussion I'd get VDL, but...

Re: Sibelius and Virtual drumline
I love Sib because I'm one of those that hate reading manuals unless I need to figure something out. Sib was really easy to play around with and to figure out. I use VDL2.5 and Garritan's Concert and Marching sounds. It's great for composing full marching band and/or drum corps music.
You do need the processing power and memory for it.
Happy writing!
