Upcoming Favorites for NCBA 2011?

Post by bandmomof3 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 12:56 pm

After attending the Rodriguez Winter Review 2011 yesterday, I’ve seen many guards with great potential and fell in love with guards from past years. Although the review was small, I can tell there is so much talent within a variety of groups this year and I’m definitely looking forward to the season.
As for my favorite, the guard I’ve been following is Laguna Creek. Their show is absolutely phenomenal this year, definitely a crowd favorite. They have been making great strides as I have been tracking their progress, from first in advanced at Rodriguez Winter Review 2010, to first in open at Rodriguez Winter Review 2011. They are a must see, and trust me, they did not disappoint at all this year.
Who are your favorites, or who are you looking forward to seeing? :D

Laguna Creek is definitely a favorite one for me this year! I can't wait for Pageantry on Parade. It's going to be a very interesting year for NCBA guards indeed!

I am looking forward to seeing Bethel this year. Their show last year was simply put, hauntingly beautiful.

Pulling for Laguna though! Those purple silks are pretty awesome!

I heard from one of my kids that Jesse Bethel is not going to compete in NCBA anymore. They are competing CCGC and WGI this year.

Someone back me up if I have my facts right, if not, then clarify please, I am wondering if this move to CCGC is true for Bethel

...doesn't help when both circuit championships are on the same day this year. This may be the first year it has happened.

Like anyone else ON THE OUTSIDE... I have seen their scores on the CCGC website. However, that doesn't mean JBHS is only doing CCGC. They could be doing both. NCBA needs to CONTINUE to understand - unlike PARADE COMPETITIONS - they have an association "competing" with them... GOOD OL' CAPITALISM (where there is no bailout!!) Hearing all the positives from the guard/perc. judges training....NCBA could be moving forward. Sure...it's easy to run to another association - just like it's easy "run" to another nation. Instead of working patiently hard to make the changes that need to be made. Just saying...

I do hope JBHS will be doing both ciruits. My heart's with percussion. However, I do have an understanding what a "loss" NCBA Winterguard would have if JBHS guard AND percussion left.

Actually, Jesse Bethel will be doing both circuits, but with that said, they will not be at NCBA Championships and will be attending CCGC Championships that day.

While they will be participating in several NCBA competitions throughout the season, which I do believe includes next week's competition at Antioch though don't quote me on the guard, I know the percussion will be there, and I know that the guard will be at their hometown competition at Vallejo, but their percussion will be participating at WGI Regionals in Union City that day. Other than that, the other competitions are sprinkled throughout the season, but a majority are dedicated to CCGC and WGI circuits.

To chime in on what is being said, it's hard to compete between different circuits, especially if the other circuits have a variety of educational values that include world-class judges like Scott Chandler, guards that go beyond performance and skill, like the Scholastic and Independent Open and World class guards, and also, which happens a majority of the time, have better facilities to perform and compete in.

Though I will say that it looks like the NCBA is making strides to better themselves as a circuit and improve the educational values as well as benefits for both instructors and students. So keep moving forward!

Back on topic, and sorry for the short rant, but I can't wait to see a lot of the groups this year. I don't want to give out a "favorite" just yet because I haven't seen all of the groups, at least in the Open class yet, but, from what I've heard and seen so far, it looks like it can be a very interesting year! :yeah:

Ive seen a video of bethel and it was... not what i expected. I dont care for their theme this year at all.

Its too early in the season to pick a favorite. And besides Ive only seen 2 other guards at this point. We'll see! Im anxious to see Armijo this year. I LOVED their theme last year. I cant wait to see what they do.

You will be happy to hear JBHS Guard and Drumline will be at Antioch. The schedule is out, you might want to check the Antioch Band web site.

About Bethel...

Once again, tough competitor in CCGC this year. Definitely a top contender for SAA championships.

As for their continued participation in NCBA, I can't speak for their program but I can comment on mine.

We are fully committed to CCGC for two reasons. First of all, for world class adjudication from the likes of Shirlee and Kathee Whitcomb, George Oliviero, Scott Pizani, Michael Turner, Shirley Dorritie, Scott Chandler, Shawn Ariza, Dan Smith et al.

The other consideration is economic. One flat fee of $200, all the shows you can handle performing at. We get a lot of bang for our buck. WGI is optional as it is a different set of competitions and not a circuit.

Currently Bethel is signed up for the Union City Regional. They are not attending Ceres, Western Regional Championships or World Championships in Dayton. Maybe next year they will consider it (hint, hint, nudge, nudge).

Perhaps when the economic climate stabilizes, we can do NCBA again. Right now, we can't afford it. Plus the shows are too far away for those of us down on the farm (south South Bay).

At any rate, no matter what circuit you compete in or what association evaluates you, good skill to all of you for the 2011 winter season.
