Everyone leader has a different style of leadership, and each person's style is based on their past experiences. The four types I'd like to look in to are:

Sanguine: Bubbly, colorful, life of the party, starters.

Meloncholy: Intravert, analitical, thinker, perfectionist.

Cholaric: Go getter, take charge, get out of the way I'm comming through type people.

Flagmatic: Peaceful, content, no worries, calm, cool, and collected.

There are millions of ways to look at personalities. The way that I've learned them is based on the four types that are listed above. A person can be (and often is) any combination of the above traits. Typically one is stronger over the rest with another one that is second.

Each trait has strengths and weaknesses. Which are you? Why are you that way?

As a manager and in training classes, we went over and over and over and over (repeat every 6 months for 15 years) how to "classify" people for several reasons, and of all of the things I've learned this ONE thing that makes people successful. People have more than one trait typically BUT certain personalities work better with others, thus the reason we learned what we were first. We could THEN apply that to many situations such as:
- Managing people (do you REALLY want a bunch of mini-me's working for you?)
- Placing people in the right positions (why put someone who is a party person in a position requiring analytical thinking?)
- Understanding customer's personalities and thus their needs (you can actually tell their main personality type from a handshake believe it or not)
- Personal relationship development (yeah ... this actually does help with the bf or gf situation)

With that said, we were taught the DISC method which is almost exactly the same as formermarcher's list:

D= Demanding or Cholaric: Go getter, take charge, get out of the way I'm comming through type people.
I = Influential or Sanguine: Bubbly, colorful, life of the party, starters.
S = Steady or Flagmatic: Peaceful, content, no worries, calm, cool, and collected.
C = Calculative/Compliant or Meloncholy: Intravert, analitical, thinker, perfectionist.

If you draw a + on a piece of paper, the D's are in the upper left; I's are upper right; S's are lower left; C's are lower right. D's and I's get along well with each other as do S's and C's. Xing over, D's and C's can communicate well as can I's and S's IF there is enough time for a meeting of the minds. D's and S's, and I's and C's basically hate each other. These matches are basically a Jekell and Hyde type situation.

Here was the scenario we were given (Home Depot):
There are 500 carts in the parking lot and none in the bays ...
If you are a D manager, you will grab 3 people from wherever that have time and send them out to get as many carts as they can in 15 minutes from 3 areas of the lot.
If you are an I manager, you will grab 3 of the "funnest" people to "ride in" on as many carts as you can before you are caught by a senior manager.
If you are an S manager, you will ask every employee if they "have time whenever" to get some carts because the customers are getting mad (S's by the way don't make good large-scale operation managers ... they are better suited as lawyers in private practice).
If you are a C manager, you will grab 4 employees, split the parking lot into quarters, tell each to get exactly 50 carts minimum each and you will time them to the second then send them back to their respective departments, then repeat if necessary to collect ALL 500.

LISTEN to formermarcher!!! Knowing what you are is the first step in the management/leadership process and it is a great skill to apply almost everywhere if you can master it!

I can understand that some of you may not want to get into these discussions. Thats totally understandable. Sometimes there are tough topics, and with school ending it can be a pretty busy time for everyone. I am hoping that we can get some more participation from current student leadership and aspiring leaders over the summer.

The posts will keep on going, so feel free to drop by and post at any time!
