I NEED NICE

Hello everyone, I'm the battery captain at my school and am finding it quite difficult sometimes to lead when I am all by myself. Sometimes I feel as though everybody is goofing around and don't take the drumline seriously. A couple drummers I have just get up and go to play on other peoples instruments, or run around and throw things, or talk and peck when I try to tell the line what our next exercise is. It is all extremely annoying and frustrates me to the point where I get mean and irritable. I would like to know how I could make myself clear and not feel overwhelmed, while still being positive. I love everything about drumline but I fear that bad attitudes interfere with our playing and make the rehearsal unproductive. Thanks for the help!!

Its hard to realize sometimes but not everyone is as into drumline as you might be.

Its also almost imposable for you as a drum captin to get people who are your peers to act right, thats what your instructors and band director are for.

The wieght of the world isnt on your shoulders, relax man (or woman^.-). Lead by example, get your section to lead by example, then get the snares quads and basses to lead by example in unity. (this takes months/years)

Also, make sure you know they arnt "your" drummers. If they get the idea that you are viewing them as a sort of possesion its all bad news. Its not "your" drumline until your the band director.

OK yeah i know that I'm a guard captain... its the same thing with my guard its really hard to get them focus like you are. It takes time all you have to do is to motativate them. Like telling them that you guys like the feeling to win thats want keps my guard going. Try to do that if that doesn't help just email me i can gladly give you tips. :D

Well... the drumline i used to be on had the same issue. Four years later the issue hasn't been solved. To quote my old band director you need "leadership by example!" Do you have close-ish friends on the line with you? i suggest approaching them first and letting them know how you feel. maybe getting them to help out by setting a good example would improve your situation.

just don't yell... that will never get you anywhere.
