Picking a Head Drum Major

So here's the predicament:

X has been a drum major for three years, starting sophomore year.
Y has been a drum major for two years, starting in junior year.
Z has been chosen as a drum major this year.

They are all seniors.

X, although chosen for three years, doesn't work nearly as hard as Y and Z, but commands attention from the band.
Y, though probably the hardest working, isn't quite as talented as X or Z in spinning/conducting, but connects with the band and rehearses it well.
Z, though talented and hard working, has only been chosen this year and has no experience, but has a tendancy to be quiet and thoughtful in their approach.

Who would you pick to be your head drum major?

My choice would be "Y". Hard working and connects well are the selling points for me. The "not as talented" as the other two can be overcome with dedication and practice. Just my two cents.

AMEN ALL THE WAY. I can deal with "lack of talent". But I LOATHE lazy. And DM's aren't supposed to be "thoughtful and quiet".

I would pick Z. There is a reason X and Y were not chosen. They have somehow proven to be wrong for the job (if not, they would have been the obvious choice to be elected). A drum major should be the hardest worker in the band, which is a great reason to not pick X. In my opinion it is not a drawback to be quiet as a drum major. As a student I paid much more attention to my band director (Mr. Landes) when he was quiet then when he was loud. Students have the tendency to shut out people who are yelling, no matter how persistent they are.

P.S. If you are a student you really have no place second guessing the decision for drum major. The decision was made, the end.

Mr. England, I believe you have misunderstood the situation. What she said was that there are 3 students that hold the position of drum major, and the position in question is HEAD drum major.

But as for my opinion, I'll second Ryan. I pretty much share the same sentiments.

That is a good catch I did misunderstand the situation. But I will stand by my pick for head drum major.
