Thursday Night Practice - Theme Night - Spirit Points

Post by BlueStarMom » Thu Sep 23, 2004 7:46 pm

Hey does your marching unit have evening practices? The BSR practices 6pm - 9pm on Thursday evenings. Tonight was "Hippie Night". Each section dresses up in clothing to reflect the theme selected. Spirit points are awarded to the section with the most participation. At the awards banquet in May the section wins an award. Other themes in the past I can remember included "Crazy Hat Night' and "80's Night" to name a couple.

At Mt. Carmel, we have rehearsals Wednesday nights from 6-9... Every week, the section leaders pick a theme for people to dress up as. Sometimes there are themes like Pajama night, Glitter night, and even Dress Up like the Directors night (this is always fun...the directors usually pick who dressed up the best on that one). This past week was Peter Pan night. We had all the sections pick a character (i.e. Peter Pan, Tigerlily/Natives, etc.) and made it a kind of contest between the sections. We (the trombones) tied with the flutes. We were the pirates (ARR!!) and the flutes were Tinkerbell (which was kind of funny because there are four or five boys in the flute section this year  ). The only requirement is that everybody still has to wear a red shirt, no matter what the theme is.

Up here in the high desert, we don't have evening practices because our kids travel up to 45 minutes one-way to school. But, during band camp, we have our annual 'Band Camp Olympics'. We have dress-up days, such as 'Crazy Hair Day', 'PJ-Bum Day' (most guys don't wear PJ's), and 'Career Day'. We give points to the best section, then also pick winning individuals. We also play one or two games each day, and the winning teams get points for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. On the last day of band camp, we have Captain Dressup day, where the sections bring whatever they want their captains to wear. We also have a 'decathlon', which is a massive relay where kids do various things like a 3-legged race, eat a lemon, drink from a baby bottle, and so forth. Then, at our band camp performance, we announce the 3 sections with the winning points and give each section member something appropriate from the local Dollar Store.. they love us there. :) We have lots of pictures on our website, if you want to see what we do.. here's the link http://homepage.mac.com/serranoband/media.htm

Spirit Night

That is a new take on the idea. The BSR has the theme night for all sections. Every section dresses in their best interpretation of the theme. Yours takes it up a notch. That is a clever idea.
