Front Bell or Concert Horn

Post by Coach » Wed Sep 15, 2004 4:18 pm

What does your school use for F horns on the street? Do you use front bell marching horn or concert F horn? I am asking about street only.

our school uses concert horns on street cuase our director says it gives it a more fuller darker sound than a front bell horn
There is no reality in the absence of observation.

I going to say, depends on the depth and stregnth of the section. If you have a strong section who are going to be heard, please use French Horns (mellos and marching f horns are a little harsh and alto sax sounding) But if your section doesn't project well, (or as I say it, if you can't hear it, it doesn't count) Then you might consider a bell front horn.

At El Dorado, we use mellophones for both street and field, but I prefer to see bands marching a concert horn on the street...it looks better in my opinion, and since my director calls a street performance a "wind ensemble marching down the street", it helps that sound, as well. 8-)

actually if I recall correctly, our assistant director said they are marching f. horns there is a difference between a front bell f horn and a mello. But yeah we haven't remained consistent in what we use in parade I think this year we have opted for the front bell over the concert horns because the numbers in the section have fallen

Did one of the other mods delete my post, or did the board just eat it? :?
