Just curious, what do you all think of the show Malaguena? :hum: Good and bad aspects of it?

We played it in stage band. Good park and blow piece in certain parts. Definitely one of those pieces worth blowing out your chops for.

The good - Great music that translated perfectly into our medium

The bad - WAAAAAAAAAAAAY over-played. Everyone listening knows every note, and its REEEEEEEEAAAALLLLLLY noticable when it isn't played correctly.

BTW mellochick, would you perchance have played with the Tiger Brass this fall? I'm Eric, one 'o the tubas.

I haven't seen "the show" Malagueña, but I have heard several variations of the song itself. You all can say what you want about how you don't like it. However, for me I LOVE IT!

I really enjoy latinish/jazz pieces and this combines it into one. My favorite rendition of it is the one done by Blast! Wailing drums, incredible horn line, whatever is all in that song and it is done magnificently. I give it 2 thumbs up!

Long live Malagueña! :king:

Yeah, I agree that it's overplayed. But don't get me wrong, I think it's really freaking cool. I think Blast needs to come back and bring us another favorite.

my band just plays Malaguena obsessively as pep music cuz the low brass is obsessed with it. but besides that it's totally a fun arrangement.

We are using a canned show from Marching Concepts and the "M" word song is the opener. I guess the saving grace is that I always rewrite the battery parts because most of the time it seems like the arrangers use the usual redundant "latin style" phrases and after hearing the song since I was marching back in 198...(thats not important right now :D ), I have some different things in my head that may make it a bit more interesting than the normal parts. I do love the song so I take it with a grain of salt.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Malaguena as much as the next corps fan. If a group is willing to do their take on it I'm all ears, but too many groups play it verbatim ( Madison style ) while watering down a few licks here and there. Originality goes a long way in my book. :cool2:

If shows/music were never redone/reinvented we wouldn't have had the splendor that is the '94 BD show, or the 30+ years of Cadets doing West Side Story. :P

....and a very good Malaguena that was! I seriously don't know if they can top that one.

Time to watch the vid again.
