Maytime Band Review ends in 2004?
Moderators: Trumpet Man 05, malletphreak, Hostrauser, instrumental director
Sometimes you've just got to roll with the times. I remember when Glen Wilson used to go and my sister remembers when Loara and Mater Dei used to go. Let's face it folks, it's all those schools down there in South SD County that come out for it. What big names have gone in the past 5 years? BV yes, but c'mon....no Arcadia, no Thousand Oaks, No RB, No Mt. Carmel, No El Dorado, No Valencia.....no big names.
Just my opinion

....
You mean to say Bonita Vista "ins't" a big name? Maybe you should go look at the recaps from this years and the past few years Arcadia street scores......
Almost....
The bands you mentioned are all outstanding groups - no question about it.euphman wrote:hahaha, you gotta be kidding me man. Montebello isn't big enough? How about Notre Dame? Mayfair? Rosemead? all those schools are from LA/Orange County. A couple of years ago we had Benicia, norcal powerhouse come down and they won the small school sweepstakes. Maybe it's not that its all the schools from south SD that go and compete, maybe it's just that all of those schools are good and happen to score high and are on each other's heels? Think about that?
But Benicia did not win the small school sweepstakes according to the recaps I have. They were penalized 9.0 points for playing a march not on the approved list. Even without the penalty, though, they would not have won sweepstakes that year. Even Benicia, probably one of the best parade bands in the state, has trouble competing outside their normal competitive circle. Blame it on familiarity, stylistic interpretation, different judging standards - there are as many theories as there are bands. With few exceptions, bands that have established themselves in one "circuit" (for lack of a better word) don't do as well in other "circuits."
Well maybe your recaps are wrong b/c the trophy says otherwise...Benicia DID win a few years ago.[/quote]But Benicia did not win the small school sweepstakes according to the recaps I have. Recaps
Do you know what year? Maybe I'm looking at the wrong recaps, but I didn't think Benicia had been down that many times in recent years. It's possible the penalty was rescinded but the change isn't reflected on the official recaps.Ryan wrote: Well maybe your recaps are wrong b/c the trophy says otherwise...Benicia DID win a few years ago.
music award
Benecia won the music award that year, but due to their penalty for not playing a march on the SCSBOA list, they received a large penalty knocking them out of the running for a major placement.

Few years ago...
Few means "three or more" and a couple means two...
A "few" years ago Benicia won the music award playing BB and CF but not the SS award due to the major penalty. As to 2002, that was a "couple" of years ago...

Benicia's most recent Maytime
The year was 2002, the march was
unter der admirals flagge
and yes Benicia DID walk away with the Sweepstakes trophy that year. I remember... cause we had to send the trophy back a year later (although it would have been nice to try keep it, but a yearly trip to SD would be FAR too harsh on the budget). The reason there was no penalty was because we petitioned extreamly earily in the year (late 2001) for the march to be put on the list. Hence... no penalty.

2002 Maytime Band Review Results
You're right, Ryan.Ryan wrote:2002 Maytime Band Review. Could I see your recap?
John and I referred to the same recaps with the 9.0 penalty. My copy seems to have disappeared or been misfiled, but I did get the recaps from the SCSBOA office last week and they are obviously different than the ones I had. I don't know why.... I was in error - Benicia did win the Small School Sweepstakes in 2002 as well as the music award. Here are the complete recaps:

End Of The Maytime Band Review
All I can say is what a shame about hearing this news. First All Western and now this, what's next.
I want to thank Edith for allowing the Long Beach Royal Syncopated Drum Corps to march the event last year. It was a lot of fun and we had a great response from a lot of the participating bands. It was fun, also, playing our set in the rain in front of all the students. For now, another great memory in our book.
