back when the long beach tournament was still on, i think those were some of the craziest bands
we were watching a video of them and its kinda shocking how they looked so perfect
but then again, they didnt really have any field bands back then too

Yeah it was a prettyb crazy time for street bands and I liked the fact that street was valued more than it is today and seen a lot as just a secondary thing. Times change and definately with the influence of drum corps.
Who do you guys think ranks among the better/best of today? I bands that do well at arcadia....since it seems to be the tournament for street?

Could it be its because parades are on the way out as well?TrumpetsRule17 wrote:kind of sad that a lot of the emphasis has shifted over
not saying that field shows arent exciting and everything but its kind of like parade bands are starting to die out a bit
Many cities and organizations just dont have the $$$ to put these shows on. At least in Field competition a entrance fee is charged and money can be obtained from food sales.
I remember growing up, parade was all there was.
I also remember about 10yrs back seeing a field show on TV and thinking who in the heck would go to see a band perform a parade on the field?
....little did I know back then
Truth is not a theory..

I think serious parades are far and few between. I gess money can be made by charging entrance fees. I remember a thread (that I could not find) about the western parade championships in Long Beach (something like that) and how it died due to lack of funding. sign of the times.....

Just a little clarification here...there have always been plenty of "field bands"! Back then, we performed what were called halftime shows and we did a different one at every home game. The explosion of competitive field tournaments is a relatively recent phenomenon--I think (someone please correct me on my decade here) most high schools really got into the field tournament arena in the 70's. We did several band reviews a year, but it wasn't by any means the cornerstone of the program.
I was in the Wm. S. Hart High band when we went to our first "halftime show competition" in 1976--I think it was the Tournament of Champions at Chaffey High School or College. To prepare, we just polished up one of our best halftime show for a week or two. The competition also included a parade band element. I believe we got third place, and we were amazed at the polish of the other bands. Afterwards, we all agreed that it would be boring to work on the same show all season, and couldn't quite understand how the halftime show would be entertaining to the fans at the football game if it we performed the same thing week after week. Boy, have times changed.
I know of two bands that still do it this way--Santiago H.S. in Corona, and Hemet H.S. Anyone know of any others?

Best Parade Band of all Time
I think that Southern California has lost a lot with the decline of Bands doing Parade Competition. That is one area in the Band World where no other state has been able to hold a candle to CA Bands . While I understand the emphasis on Field Bands, there are many states that have as good if not better field Bands than CA, however even now, CA Bands are the best in the nation on the street.. I think the lack of tradition may have something to do with it. For those Bands still doing Parade Competition, you represent a true Southern CA speciality, The Parade Bands that are best in the Nation.
