Boa Schedule

by JLGORMAN
I think the decision to hold the BOA Grand Nationals on the 4-6th of Nov 04,will effectively insure that a Texas Band does not win the competition. With the UIL 5A Contest being the 2nd of Nov, I know of no school that is going to allow a Band to miss a whole week of school to go to the BOA and UIL Competitions. Add to that this will be the final week of the football season regular schedule. If given the choice, I know of very few Bands in Texas that would opt for BOA instead of the UIL 5A championships. With the way the BOA is setting up its Regionals on the 2nd and 9th of Oct, this will only drive deeper the wedge between Bands that do BOA and those that do not. I guess that having Bands from Texas come in 1st, 2nd & 5th at Grand Nationals was to much. I think that this movement of the BOA Grand Nationals up a week will definitely cut into any Texas Bands making the trip. By the way, the UIL schedule is set in concrete. They will not change.

HMMM

Good conspiracy theory. The WBA and I believe SCSBOA have also moved up their championships next year by at least a week. This was supposedly done because of leap year and some sort of scheduling conflict and the academic calendar? But I dunno about that. The BOA change to Early October for the west regional may also affect the Cali schools from participating in the west regional as it is so early in their season. Most California Schools are only in week 2 of competition season and are still working on finishing their show. In fact last year, several of the WBA top 5 had incomplete shows at their first competition.

As you know the word on the boa forums has your theory floating around as well as several others as to why this change was made. The one that seems to make the most sense is because of the restructuring of the super regional. I hope they did not do scheduling to affect a particular region. We would all miss out on some terrific bands. Please BOA do not go to Vegas. I have heard so many horror stories about the wind gusts, stay in Phoenix if at all possible..

P.S. What is the story with Westfield and the UIL? Are they in or out? Or is that a bad rumor floating around that they have dropped out of the UIL?

Almost correct...

The SCSBOA Field Championships have not yet been scheduled for the 2003 season. For those fairly new to the marching band activity, the original intent of this event was a "pilot program" as November had 5 Saturdays in 2002 and 2003. The year of 2004 sees 4 Saturdays in November.

A very creative proposal was recently made to the VP of Field Adjudication of SCSBOA regarding a finals contest for the 2004 season. As this is in the early stage of planning (far from implementing), it is best to wait for the "results" of discussion, negotiations and planning before announcing the proposal here.

No instrumental music educator in the State of California is required to join any specific music organization or association such as SCSBOA, NCBDA, CMEA, CBDA, MENC, etc.

Whereas CIF is run by school administrators with tremendous powers of overseeing all sports and the scheduling thereof in the public and private schools of California, there is no such group overseeing the music, debate, theatre arts, song and cheer, and etc. in California.

Keeping that in mind... the wheels of decision making usually move a tad slower in SCSBOA. The BOARD of Directors will take in a great deal of input and make a decision based on what's good for all its paying members and the instrumental music programs of Southern California. Look for a decision sometime this winter or spring.

As to the thoughts of WBA or BOA, I have no idea...

BOA Regional

If the BOA is in Phoenix again in 2004, I wonder how many CA bands will or will not go? Las Vegas is a much closer regional for CA bands. However, the AZ bands that have come to Vegas in the past have had a farther drive. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I enjoyed attending the Las Vegas regional 3 times when my daughter was in marching band.

BOA SCHEDULES SPRING & WESTFIELD IN UIL

Merry Christmas:

Now as to and end of the rumors.
Spring and Westfield are still UIL Member Schools. They compete in all aspects of Athletics and activities. However they did not enter this years UIL Region Marching Contest.

I think they did not enter because of the 8 minute Rule of UIL vs the 10-11 minutes of BOA shows. The UIL does not force them to enter the Regional Marching Contest, and since this fall the 5A schools did not compete for the State Title, they figured they did not need to waste their time doing a 8 minute show for one contest.

No problem, however to win a UIL Sweepstakes Award in Music each year a Band has to have 1st Division Ratings in Marching, Concert and Sightreading. Since Spring and Westfield did not compete in Marching, they effectively told their kids, you will not be recognized as a Music Sweepstakes program.

The Rub comes up next fall when the 5A Title is up for grabs. Spring and Westfield are in the Same Region as the Woodlands and Langham Creek. In the area contest, they would run into Stephen F. Austin from Sugarland along with Woodlands, Austin Westlake and schools such as Cedar Park and Leander.

I do not know what decision will be made by Westfield and Spring. They may not march in the UIL Contests and go BOA strictly. However in that case they are going to be giving up the field to Duncanville (who neither beat in 2002) LD Bell, San Antonio Reagen , and the rest of the Texas Bands. My prediction is that they to UIL next fall.

One last thing, even if they do not enter any UIL Contest, if the schools are in the UIL for anything, they have to abide by all UIL rules including the 8 hour preactice rule. The UIL is cast in concrete about rules and regulation.

"I guess that having Bands from Texas come in 1st, 2nd & 5th at Grand Nationals was to much."

You like conspiracy theories, don't you?

I live in Indiana, have been to every BOA Grand Nationals since 1990, and have the programs from all those years. Now, if you have not been to BOA Grand Nationals, you may not be aware of this but in the BOA program, they have the dates not only for the following year's Grand Nationals but also 4 or 5 years out.

The early date for next year's Grand Nationals has been in the BOA programs for at least the past 3 years (which would have been 2000- a year in which no Texas bands showed up except for a university band who did an exhibition). This event isn't scheduled after the prior year; it's scheduled several years out.

I don't know why the date is a year earlier next year, but keep in mind that the RCA Dome is attached to a huge Convention Center which attracts all sorts of huge national and international conventions and trade shows (and the Dome is also used for these events).

Also, most of the midwest states surrounding Indiana are done in late October. Although California is still going strong in mid-November, that is 2-3 weeks after the season has ended in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina, etc. Maybe they scheduled it a week earlier than normal to get some "new blood" to come; bands who don't want to go that late in the school year with marching band.

I don't know the reason, but I can tell you that Grand Nationals in 2005 and 2006 should be back at the "normal" weekend.

I am sorry if you think that Conspiracy Theories are a strong suit of mine or of most Texas People. I am not big into that type of stuff. It should be noted that by having the Grand Nationals on the 4-6 of Nov, you not only conflict with Texas, but with Florida, and the Cavlacade of Bands in the Middle Atlantic States.

I do sort of take offense about the NEW BLOOD theory. I noticed that most of the States you named were in the Middle West and the Kentucky, Tennessee area. If you have some great Bands hiding there, I think they should be seen. I am sorry that having to extend the marching season a week or two would scare them off.

However, when you have all midwestern bands, you have a midwestern competition which really carries little or no weight with the rest of the nation. If BOA wants to get NEW BLOOD, in my opinion, it will not happen this way.

By the way, I do not care if any Texas Bands win Grand Nationals, however if you want a National Championship, you better have Bands from across the nation.

Mucho Interesting....

It seems that if California bands want to go to Grand Nationals they would have to redo their entire schedule. Begining with band camps etc just to be ready for a show of that magnitude early in November.

Mr Gorman that 2004 UIL 5A champioships seems to be a regional unto itself similar to San Antonio this year....

Im glad we dont have the CIF running the California band circuits. Can you image the mess that would come out of that? With all the rules and regs!!!

I guess we cant make everyone happy on the date. It is nice if the date is the same yr to yr so as to enable proper planning.

I dont know if the "new blood" theory is a good one either. I guess we should wait and see if the black helicopters start to snatch band directors, then we would really have a good conspiracy theory....LOL

Hmmm so that will be up for debate on this forum over the next few months as to what will be reality vs rumor...

Discussion set...

There will be a discussion session regarding SCSBOA Finals (field only) held at the SCSBOA Mid-Winter Conference at CSULB in February. Best guess is that the decision regarding finals (field only) will be forthcoming sometime in March or April.

BOA Vegas or Phoenix

Personally I have been at BOA in Las Vegas 3 times for their regional. Yes it was windy, and one year the site moved from UNLV to Silverado H.S. due to flooding of the field. I do not think the wind justfies the only reason to move the site to Phoenix.

When my 8th grade daughter starts HS marching band 2004-2005 I do not know if the band would attend BOA Phoenix. This year they did not go.

Did more or less number of CA bands attend Phoenix this past year than did Las Vegas? I am curious to know.

Sorry for the lenghty response :? but here are the numbers from BOA site. It seems California has been consistent on the number of bands that have attended and they have seemed to all have represented themselves well as most have made it to finals...
