Most companies that provide internet connections also give you some space where you can host a website. I use Verison DSL, and they let you have about 5 megs, I think, which is plenty of space. The dialup companies I used before that also had varying amounts of space, where I posted our band's website. Even AOL has website space. Check with the company that you get your service from, you probably already have the room. If you are lucky enough to use a Mac and have the .mac service, you have 100 megs of space, which is enough room for quicktime movies of your entire field show, drum line show, or whatever. Plus, putting up the site is as easy as drag and drop. Our band website is hosted there now. Most web design software includes what you need to connect to a server and upload your site. It's not hard to do.
Before you put up a site, be sure to check your district's policy on school websites. You can get into trouble if you're not careful... and don't put up a message board! :)

smd89 wrote:I was wondering, of all the bands/colorguards/drumlines out there, where do you host your websites? did you get webspace from the school? or did you pay for your own hosting? I'm currently working on the Torrance High Drumline website (along with several other people) and was wondering what everyone else did for hosting?
I assume you are looking at a free hosting? The biggest problems with these and even with some of the so called bigger sites(yahoo,MSN) is:

1. Space and throughput are limited
2. They only offer their own web builder software
3. You cant advertise or promote your sponsors
4. popups and advertisement will appear as part of the package

Using School resources has its problems as well

1. Most schools will not let you upload to their servers
2. The District has editorial rights to what is posted.
3. Its not timely to update.

Web hosting runs from $10.00-$20.00 a month, depending on the ISP. You wll also have to pay for site registration $30 per year. I saw Neebski reccomend IPOWERWEB they are very good and cost effective and also will have offers of free site registration if you pay for 3 months in advance. Lastly if you do go to a hosting company you will want to purchase or obtain a good web creator package either Microsoft frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Good luck and go for it. But I must warn you if you thought you had little spare time before well it will all be gone.lol If you need help plenty of people on this board will im sure be glad to send you some pointers or contact me as well.

P.S- You may want to check other sites out as a help and you may need to post a discalimer regarding school district policies.

http://www.webhostingratings.com/ is a good site to see what are great options for hosting! just dont pay any attention to how the site looks LoL... oh and remember get a good host that is close to you, dont get a host that is in like New York and you live in Califorina... what that does is slows down your uploads so it would take a really long time to put things on ur site so yea...
