I've played a King Sousaphone, Yamaha, Holton, Olds, Weston, and VMI. The King I had, had a .687" bore. 4 valves. I guess it depends on the player to say whether a horn takes a lot of air or not. Some people have a lot of air....

Yamaha's were used as student horns and were small and comfortable to play. They stand the test of time, especially for students. Yamahas are small in size but they have a nice, rich sound, and they have fully compensating valves. They fly.Kings are more like a pro horn, with 4-5 front action valves, and fine tuning slides. Yamahas are small in size but they have a nice, rich sound, and they have fully compensating valves. They fly.

I would probably choose the Yamaha for it's amount of back pressure and tone, the King for it's professional appeal and performance.

Just my opinion, don't kill me.
