From my experience marching band has never gotten in the way of my academic peformance. During my junior and senior years of high school I took nothing but honors classes and maintained a 4.0 GPA or above. So with the common theme of this thread, just manage your time and you'll be fine. As UCI-mike said it pays off in college when you're faced with a more rigourous academic load, especially in the quarter system. Finally, remember that being in marching band will not get you the high paying job, it the lessons that you take from it that will help you succeed in the future.

:wav: Just a few short years ago.. There was a scientific study done at UCIrvine  ... It was repeated in other university settings.. Though not specific to Marching Band... the study indicated that students enrolled and participating in musical studies in elementary and secondary schools were more apt to become good students and achieve higher grades :read: ... It had to do with cognitive recognition and the correlation to mathematical relationships.. since music relies on counts and rhythm and being able to multi task.. reading the sheet music and playing at the same time, the student is counting and 'thinking ahead' :hum: ... I don't have the study in front of me anymore... but I am sure a music teacher or band director might better be able to speak to this subject.. It was quoted nationally when band programs were being cut back  ....
If you think that a ten week period of marching band is impacting you negatively it might just be that you are just not concentrating on your academic studies due to the requirements to excel in band during the start of the school year.... As the bible says.. "This Too Shall Pass"... as band winds down your academic grades will probably rise  ... also towards the end of the marching season the learning requirements for the field should ease due to your familiarity with the presentation you have been part of :king: .... OK.. let the screaming begin.... Happy Holidays everyone... :lurk:

Last year, My Freshman year.. My grades sucked the whole year because I was In marching band, Concert, and Indoor, So I had no time for anything.. This year I've worked out a schedual and I am now a straight A student.. I just got use to having no time and made what little time I had to study and do work.

it comes down to whether or not you really want to do your hw. time management helps but i always sleep 3 hours later than i normaly do (hence my 8 hours of sleep per WEEK). but i dont think my grades are that much worse

yah it is really about how u manage ur time and your laziness. Like sometimes you just want to relax due to all the stuff u have to do. But like the thought that you can't finish ur hw in time allows u to due it fast and u get it done becuase if i didn't have any extra activites then i would just do it in the last minute well that is me :) But dont any oen have liek 2
extra activities goin on the same tiem and u dont know where to go? I have that a lot. And it suck becuase you want ot be in this but also in that but can't clone urself and make two people in two different places

OMG Like, at our school, 80% of the "Top Ten Seniors" are all band students, and all section leaders.
If your in band, your an awsome scholar.
Yay us!

people in band don't always get bad grades
while we may appear more tired than other people, we are usually able to still pull through once the band season is over
i just find that its sometimes hard to do some of the hw after long rehearsals
well i have to agree that multitasking is one of the best options
lol probably the only thing distracting is this forum
but iz cool haha

It's sort of funny that you would say that, since musicians tend to be able to think on higher levels.
Hopefully it's not just my school, but our band has the highest cumulative team gpa (and I have a feeling that either team or cumulative shouldn't be there). Additionally, for as long as I can think of, we've had either the Valedictorian or Salutorian in the band.
If marching time is really in the way though, try to utilize your OTHER free time. Bring homework on bus rides or weekend trips if your band takes them. Plus, you can get help from fellow band mates *especially upperclassmen* :D
