Is it just me or do band people have lower grades then people who have a typical schedule of academics and one or two electives? My grades are'nt that great and my classes are not that hard. The main problem is because a lot of marching band. I just want to know what other people do to keep up with school. I know I'm not the only one with this problem.

multitask. get used to it...in college it gets worse...especially if you haven't learned how to do so through your years in high school.

Most of the band students I talk to claim that they get better grades during marching season--they say that you really have to be organized and focused to get all your work done, and this results in better overall grades.

Maybe you need to get busy and get organized and use your time wisely.

my grades droped a bit, but ive also been very very very tired lately.. so marching band and school are really draining me.

Its pretty cool at our band rehearsals. Our director knows that if we don't have good grades, we can't go to the competitions. He always tells us to do our homework before we do anything for band. We still have to show up at the out-of-school rehearsals, but he allows us to finish our homework there. Most of the time, we don't really have a lot of homewrok at our school, even with all honors classes, so we usually don't have to miss out on rehearsals.

Actually it's quite the opposite! Band and Color guard people have better grades because like Frankfan said, we're better organize and can multitask and we have better focus sometimes. In my school the group with the best grades is band/cg.

Actually, I'm having a bit of trouble at school too and my parents are blaming it on band. Rather its not. Band gets me friends to study w/ and motivates me to focus and try my best.
I think your problem is just as mine is.

Look at what you're doing right now. You are on the computer at "WoP" when you know you have hw to do (I do too).
Get off.
Go do your hw.
NOW.

That's going to be what makes the difference... whether you really want to work or not.

I agree. Most of the kids in our band that are in my class ('04) are in the top of the class. Last year we had one valedictorian out of the 3. GO BAND! :p

Very good point. Usually when I visit this website, it's in the mornings when I'm waiting for my mom to get ready so she can take me to school. On occassion I'll be here after school. But it's not really homework that brings down my grades it's usually something else like weekend projects tests and lack of studying.

in marching band season my grades do suffer and i use the rest of the semester making points back up. although according to my bd, most people do the same 2nd semester. 1st semester just gets me really tired from all the rushing and late night hw. what i cant stand is night practice cuz i always do my hw after practice for some reason

Learn to time manage. Helps out later in life as well as in the present.

I agree with Rockchick and bluestarmom. The avg GPA of the Band is 3.5. They learn to multitask which is skill that not many in the work arena possess and is a skill I look to when hiring. Its like real life you need to;

1. Work smarter and harder
2. Manage your time
3. Multitask
4. Be disciplined

Just a few short years ago.. There was a scientific study done at UCIrvine ... It was repeated in other university settings.. Though not specific to Marching Band... the study indicated that students enrolled and participating in musical studies in elementary and secondary schools were more apt to become good students and achieve higher grades ... It had to do with cognitive recognition and the correlation to mathematical relationships.. since music relies on counts and rhythm and being able to multi task.. reading the sheet music and playing at the same time, the student is counting and 'thinking ahead' ... I don't have the study in front of me anymore... but I am sure a music teacher or band director might better be able to speak to this subject.. It was quoted nationally when band programs were being cut back ....
If you think that a ten week period of marching band is impacting you negatively it might just be that you are just not concentrating on your academic studies due to the requirements to excel in band during the start of the school year.... As the bible says.. "This Too Shall Pass"... as band winds down your academic grades will probably rise ... also towards the end of the marching season the learning requirements for the field should ease due to your familiarity with the presentation you have been part of .... OK.. let the screaming begin.... Happy Holidays everyone...
