Congrats El Dorado, you guys just sounded phenomenal and a couple of friends got to see you show form the home side. I fell in love with your Chicago theme...the color guard with wigs and they had not performed perfectly, the stage band, it was just great! Who would think a band that was just some band 3-6 years ago, is now one of THE groups to watch.

Rancho Bernardo, omg! Your sound was perfect, even though I couldn't hear the first half down by the pop-corn stand, I herd the second half. It was great! Good job!

Arcadia, all I could say am I wishing I were able to be able to go on the track and perform like all your brass did!

UCLA, omg! Your Latin trumpet solo, Old Man River? Wow! It was just great, and then you performed for what, 15-20 mins straight? It was just great!

Chino...weren't you guys bigger? I thought you were about 100- people less from last year. Personally I think you get the biggest props. The rain was the worst when you performed. And the was not one major slip or fall.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE 6A BANDS WHO KEPT PERFORMING THROUGH THE RAIN!

I totally agree with RifleDiva on this! I am so proud of us. We came from getting 3rd at Arcadia last year to getting 1st, and absolutely not without work and sweat. All the other bands did great, too. I'm just dissappointed I didn't get to see all of their shows! It bothers me that as a part of the band/guard we don't get to watch the other bands/guards. hehe. Oh, well...one day, I'll watch even El Dorado from the stands...but until then, I'll be out on that field performing my heart out! hehe.

I enjoyed most of the shows, but I felt that some of the shows were, quite frankly, not good. Call me old fashioned, but I those are my feelings. Some of the groups, in mty opinion did not live up to their hype. But, Congrats to the all groups. You all did well, despit my opinion.
Amen, brother.
I have to say, I was very disappointed when I heard the scores.
I second Mr. Turner....
Tell us your opinions, Personal!

Just be honest...

Well, to be truthful, it is NOT totally anonymous, but that is beside the point. Giving honest opinions is not in itsself rude, unless you throw tact and common sense out the window at the same time. Being rude is adding insult to injury, and it doesn't sound like that's what you want to do. Don't be afraid to speak your mind, just don't TRY to hurt someone's feelings while doing it. Some may still take offense, but if your intentions are true, then that is THEIR problem.

And to get things started I will give my opinion of the performances at the Arcadia Show. My comments will be in very general terms, aimed more at the activity instead of an individual unit.

Good things - tone quality and intonation from the bands is much improved over past years. In fact, I am really happy to hear some really fine trumpet sections after years of weak high brass sounds. Also I am REALLY happy to see woodwind sections being featured so prominately in so many shows, but there are still a few bands that tend to hide their woodwinds in the back. Percussion sections continue the improve and become more sophisticated and color guards are becoming even better performers and are more intigrated into the overall show designs.

Bad things - Are bands just playing notes or or they playing music? With today's increasing demand on the visual aspect of the activity, are we selling the kids short and not giving them the time they need to learn music properly? Wind musicians today seem to be much better rhythmically, but how much of that can be attributed to listening to the much improved drum lines within the band? My BIGGEST concern is that most of the bands that performed Saturday night wouldn't know what to do with a melodic line of music if it were handed to them on a silver platter. I heard lots of nice notes being played, but very little true melody! It's like the wind players don't understand the importance of the melody and how to properly balance it and maintain the flow from phrase to phrase. Most of the musical performances had no heart... no real emotional connection with the audience. I can give a long explanation of these details, but I think I will save that for another thread. The short answer is that music is supposed to be an emotional experience for the audience, most bands today are NOT accomplishing that goal.
